Hi I'm Professor Hannah Bottger from the architecture program at the University of San Francisco I'm here to help you choose classes for your first semester I'm assuming that you're already familiar with the college's General academic requirements so I'll be telling you about the specific first semester requirements for the architecture program a student typically registers for 16 to 18 credits per semester students in the architecture and Community design program must register for six courses during their first semester these classes will include three architecture and Community design program courses which are introduction to architecture and Community design a two-unit course architecture Studio 1 a 4unit freehand drawing for architecture course and architectonics 1 a 2un laboratory course focusing on 2D and 3D visualization and modeling techniques if more than one section is offered you may choose whichever section works best for you you will additionally need to take a required orientation course in order to use the fabrication tools and equipment this course arcd 104 meets for just three consecutive Fridays and can be taken for zero or one unit it is required for future access to the tools and Labs of the Department of Art Plus architecture next we recommend that you register for a composition course developing good writing skills is absolutely essential to your success in all the classes you'll take at USF you should know which class to register for if you don't please review the tutorial there are many options available for your fifth course and we strongly recommend that you use this course to fulfill a college requirement one option is to take a foreign language you are required to take three semesters of a foreign language we recommend that you start early in your academic career to complete this requirement you should complete a foreign language placement test that will indicate whether you should start at the first second or third semester of a particular language the choice of foreign language is yours you could choose Spanish French Italian or German for example however you must satisfy the requirement in one language not three semesters of different languages you can also enroll in a first year or transfer seminar as a class with only a small number of students students these seminars serve as a great introduction to the academic environment at USF in addition the seminars usually can be applied to one of the core requirements you can also take a public speaking course during your first semester on campus the training you'll receive in that course will be useful in all subsequent courses inside or outside the major another option would be to satisfy one of your remaining core requirements such as philosophy Theology and religious studies or ethics there are also many one to two credit courses that you may like to consider a college success course a physical activity course or get involved in a play production or join a choir or a vocal group once you've selected your classes your schedule should resemble something like this if you are a transfer student you may have completed some of these courses it is important important for you to review your degree evaluation to determine which courses you need to complete spend some time navigating the schedule of classes to familiarize yourself with the layout of the website look for courses that you would like to register for including specific sections spend some time doing this to find a schedule that works for you if you have any questions please contact us at the end of this tutorial you'll be asked to complete a quiz once you've completed the quiz you'll be eligible to sign up for classes when registration opens we look forward to meeting you during our orientation to your major Workshop during this Workshop we will review the major and you'll have the opportunity to meet faculty and fellow students welcome to USF
