Required Examinations

The State of California requires individuals to demonstrate subject matter competency in order to earn teaching credentials. UTEC participants achieve this by passing the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) in their chosen subject area(s).

California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET)

UTEC participants are REQUIRED to have all exams taken and passed by the start of their final undergraduate year.

Failure to do so will result in placement on probation, which could interfere with the School of Education application process for student teaching. In some cases, this can result in dismissal from the UTEC. Specific timelines for testing can be discussed with the advisor. Prep courses and materials are available.

Below are the exams based on the type of credential desired:

Credential area Required exams:
Multiple Subjects 3 CSET subtests + Writing Skills (or CBEST)
SS - English 4 subtests + CBEST
SS - Social Studies 3 subtests + CBEST
SS - Math 2 subtests + CBEST
SS - Science 2 subtests + CBEST

IMPORTANT: Registration is done online and students are able to retake these exams as many times as needed.

Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA)

Students pursuing a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential must also pass the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment, also known as RICA.

Beginning teachers need to be able to deliver effective reading instruction that: is based on the results of ongoing assessment; reflects knowledge of state and local reading standards for different grade levels; represents a balanced, comprehensive reading curriculum; and is sensitive to the needs of all students.

Multiple Subject credential seeking students should register for a RICA examination following completion of the Early Literacy course, MS C&I Reading and Language Arts course, and the RICA preparation workshop offered by USF.

Test prep and study materials

The UTEC maintains a supply of reference material and preparation books in our office. We recommend buying your own test prep material and using our resources as well as supplementary materials.

The CSET exams do require a good amount of preparation so students should allow significant time to review the material.
