Title: 21st Century Teaching - Stories and Trends
Speaker: Renee Franzwa, Director, Higher Ed, Ed Surge

Renee Franzwa, Director, Higher Ed, Ed Surge

A university is launching a new health education campus in Cleveland using VR learning simulations instead of cadavers. A water agency official teaches her first online community college course using open educational resources for a zero-cost textbook degree program. Another professor started a podcast to learn about how other faculty are teaching these days. These are just some of the stories that EdSurge is chronicling this year to highlight the incredibly innovative teaching practices happening in (and off) college campuses. In this talk we’ll take a look at some of the trends, research and surprising stand-out stories of how practitioners are experimenting and engaging students in new ways, but also pause to take a look at the experiments that did not pan out.

Renee leads Higher Education Strategy at EdSurge. She has worked on many levels at colleges (including at UC Berkeley and Stanford University) and previously co-founded an edtech company. Her favorite resume moments include serving as a student advisor both in the US and abroad (including Ghana and the Galapagos Islands), and working to establish General Assembly’s San Francisco campus. She attended USF for her Master’s in Human Rights Education and has her B.S. from Cal Poly, SLO, as well as a series of certifications in design thinking, product management, and partnership development. The only passion that may outpace her drive to foster equal opportunities for all learners, is her love of cooking and bringing people around a dining table together.
