Do you have a hunger for making a difference in our world and within our generation? Are you interested in getting experience that connects your passions with real issues? Are you passionate about gaining the skills to be a change agent in your community at the local, state, or national level?

If so, the undergraduate programs through the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good are great opportunities for you to get internship experience, connect what you learn at USF in a new, exciting environment, and prepare you with practical skills for your future.
The McCarthy Sacramento Fellows Program is a fully funded summer 2022 program that combines a full-time internship at various institutions to implement California public policy. Students spend the summer interning in Sacramento and live, work, and explore the state capital, while developing practical skills and learning opportunities necessary to prepare them for future careers in public service.

The McCarthy Fellows in San Francisco is a fall 2022 semester-long program that integrates a part-time internship with the City & County of San Francisco alongside a rigorous academic seminar. Students develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions to be informed participants in democratic life while also contributing to local policymaking, administration, and politics aimed at shaping San Francisco into a more inclusive and equitable city.
USF in D.C. is a semester-long program in the fall or spring. Students participate in an internship, as well as take coursework. This is a great opportunity to build real-world experience and professional skills to help achieve future career goals. All majors are welcome to apply. Admission is rolling so students can apply in advance for an upcoming fall or spring semester.
Priority Deadlines for all programs are October 15. Programs fulfill the community-engaged learning/service-learning requirement. All majors are welcome to apply!

Public Service and Community Engagement Minor This interdisciplinary 20-unit minor drives students from diverse majors to analyze intersections between themselves and their communities and explore social justice issues. At the same time, students will discover opportunities to develop and implement skills for effective civic engagement and social change.
Community Empowerment Activists is a year-long program that prepares students as visionary organizers and movement workers through critical analysis of systems of oppression and movements of resistance while mobilizing for people-powered change through placements with grassroots organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Applications will be open at the start of spring semester 2022. To learn more, please contact Jacqueline Ramos, at
