Recommended and Minimum Hardware Configurations for Students

The ITS Help Desk does not make any specific recommendations regarding your choice of Mac or PC computers. Depending on the software required for some courses, Mac users should be prepared to run VMWare so that they can run a Windows operating system. The Windows OS is available at no cost through DreamSpark.

Students should also check with their school or department to determine if there are additional requirements for their course of study. Below are links to schools and/or departments that have suggested Computer Standards.

Recommended Configuration

The information below provides the minimum and recommended hardware configurations for working efficiently in the USF computing environment.
Hard Drive: 256GB or larger Solid State Drive
Memory: 8GB RAM or greater
Processor: Intel 7th or 8th Generation Core-i > 2 GHz
Wireless: 802.11n 2.4Ghz AND 5Ghz

Minimum Configuration

Hardware needs to meet at least the minimum standards summarized below. Students should also check with their school or department to determine if there are additional requirements for their course of study.
Hard Drive: 128GB
Memory: 6GB RAM
Processor: Intel 5th Generation Core-i > 2 GHz
Wireless: 802.11 a/b/g

Recommended Operating Systems

Apple OS X: macOS 10.12: Sierra minimum, macOS 10.14: Mojave recommended.
Microsoft Windows: Windows 8.1 (64 bit) minimum, Windows 10 recommended.
