Learning Center Services
We have many services at the Learning & Writing Center for both undergraduate and graduate students at USF, most of which are free.
The LWC offers free one-on-one and group peer tutoring in many subjects for undergraduate students. Over 50% of USF students who have utilized peer tutoring have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher each semester.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free program that allows SI leaders (undergraduate students who have previously taken the class and received an A- or higher) to lead weekly sessions for students who are seeking extra support in a particularly challenging class. SI leaders are required to attend the specific class for a 2nd time and work closely with the professors to ensure that the weekly sessions they facilitate are effective and helpful.
The Writing Center offers free 30 minute appointments to all USF undergraduate and graduate students, at the San Francisco main campus and all additional campus locations. These appointments are led by USF faculty members who have extensive experience with many different types/styles of writing and can be conducted either in person or via phone/Skype.
Peak Performance Sessions
The LWC offers a variety of free academic workshops within the campus-wide Student Success Workshop Series. These academic workshop topics include tips on good time management skills, note taking & test taking skills as well as helping you discover what type of learning style you have & how to use it to your advantage. For a list of current workshops, dates and descriptions, visit the Peak Performance Sessions website.
One-on-One Appointments with LWC Staff
The LWC Director & Assistant Director are happy to meet one-on-one with any USF undergraduate or graduate student to discuss general academic study strategies that might be helpful. Such strategies include, but are not limited to: time management, general study skills (test taking, note taking, reading), goal setting & prioritizing and much more! Feel free to contact the LWC at 415-422-6713 or firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment. Meet the LWC Director and Assistant Director and the rest of the staff!
America Reads Tutoring Program
America Reads consists of around 60 USF undergraduate students, who go out into various elementary schools or after-school programs within the San Francisco Unified School District to tutor literacy to children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The LWC has enjoyed providing this unique opportunity to USF undergraduate students since America Reads began nationwide in 1997. This program is only open to those students who have work study.
Families & Youth in Transition Tutoring Program
The Families & Youth in Transition (FYIT) tutoring program provides an opportunity for USF undergraduate and graduate students to tutor at various schools and after-school programs within the San Francisco Unified School District. The student population these tutors work with range from Kindergarten through 12th grade and are either homeless or in transition (residing in a shelter, group home or similar living situation). The tutors in the FYIT program usually have a special interest and passion for helping this particular population within the San Francisco community.
The LWC has ample study space for all USF students to use and we are open later than most offices on campus! We also have a conference room with whiteboards and a projector, should you want to reserve the space for practicing for a presentation or working on a group project. Our hours are Mon-Thurs 8:30am-8pm, Fri 8:30am-5pm & Sun 12-8pm. Feel free to reserve our conference room by contacting the front desk at (415) 422-6713 or email@example.com.
Computers, GO Print Station & Textbooks
The LWC has four computers for all USF students to use while the Center is open. We also have a computer dedicated to the Rosetta Stone, where students can check out the program for free to help them learn Spanish or French. The LWC also has a wide array of textbooks (some of which professors use in their classes) that can also be checked out, to help with studying or further understanding of class material.
Front Desk Assistance
The Front Desk staff are here to provide you with any support you are seeking through the LWC. Whether you are here to meet your peer tutor or Writing Center consultant, need to check out a textbook, or just have a general question - the LWC front desk staff is here to assist in anyway they can.
