Architecture Hi. I am Professor Hana Bottger. I am here to help you choose classes for your first semester. I am assuming that you are already familiar with the CollegeÕs general academic requirements, so I will be telling you about the specific first semester requirements for the Architecture and Community Design Program. A student typically registers for 16-18 credits per semester. Four 4-credit courses and perhaps 1 or 2 credits of extracurricular activities. Because of the difference in backgrounds for students entering in the spring semester, it is necessary for each student to discuss their Major course choices with an Advisor. This can be done in person or by email. Please contact either myself, Professor Hana Bottger hmori2@usfca.edu, Professor Seth Wachtel slwachtel@usfca.edu or Professor Tanu Sankalia tssankalia@usfca.edu or Professor Steven Doctors sidoctors@usfca.edu You will likely be taking three courses in Architecture and Community Design, so for your remaining classes please consider the following options when selecting your classes. We recommend that you register for a Composition course. Developing good writing and speaking skills is absolutely essential to your success in all the classes you will take at USF. You should know which class to register for. If you do not, please review the chapter Rhetoric and Composition. There are many options available for your fifth course, and we strongly recommend that you use this course to fulfill a College requirement. One option is to take a foreign language. You are required to take three semesters of a foreign language. We recommend that you start early in your academic career to complete this requirement. You should complete a foreign language placement test that will indicate whether you should start at the first, second, or third semester of a particular language. The choice of foreign language is yours, for example, you may choose Spanish, French, Italian, or German. However, you must satisfy the requirement in one language, not three semesters of three different languages. You can also enroll in a First Year Seminar or Student-in-Transition Seminar. As a class with only a small number of students, these seminars serve as a great introduction to the academic environment at USF. In addition, the seminars usually can be applied to one of the Core requirements. You can also take a Public Speaking course during your first semester on campus. The training you will receive in that course will be useful in all subsequent courses, inside or outside the major. Another option would be to satisfy one of your remaining Core requirements such as Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies, or Ethics. There are also many 1-2 credit courses that you may like to consider. Here are some suggestions: A College success course A Physical activity course A Computer Science course Get involved in play production Join a choir or vocal group Once you have selected your classes, your schedule should resemble something like thisƒ 1. Major Course 2. Major Course 3. Major Course 4. RHET 110 Written Communication I 5. First Year Seminar Or this (for transfer students): 1. Major Course 2. Major Course 3. Major Course 4. RHET 250 Academic Writing at USF 5. Transfer Year Seminar If you are a transfer student, you may have completed some of these courses. It is important for you to review your degree evaluation to determine which courses you need to complete. Spend some time navigating the Schedule of Classes to familiarize yourself with the layout of the website. Look for courses that you would like to register for, including specific sections. Spend some time doing this to find a schedule that works for you. You should also keep a back up list in case some classes are closed. If you come across any problems, please contact us. art+architecure@usfca.edu 415.422.5685 We look forward to meeting you during our Orientation to your Major workshop.
