Hi, I am Professor Jonas from the Economics Department. I am here to help you select your classes for your first year at USF. A student typically registers for 16-18 credits per semester. Four, 4 credit courses and perhaps 1 or 2 credits of extracurricular activities. Of these 4 classes, it is important that you register for one of the two foundation courses in Economics. ECON 111, Principles of Microeconomics or ECON 112, Principles of Macroeconomics Most students take ECON 111 before ECON 112, but this is not required. These courses are the prerequisite for all courses in Economics. Both of these classes fulfill your Core E, Social Sciences requirement. For your next course, you should register for a Composition course. Developing good writing and speaking skills is essential to your success in the classes you will take at USF. You should know which class to register for. If you do not, please review the chapter on Rhetoric and Composition. Here are some options for your remaining classes: A first year seminar or a transfer year seminar. These seminars serve as a great introduction to the academic environment at USF and will fulfill a Core requirement. MATH 101 Elementary Statistics. This class provides an important background for Economics and is a prerequisite for our second year Economic Methods course. You can take this course anytime during your first year. Elementary Statistics counts as part of the Core curriculum in Core B1, Math. A foreign language. As an Economics major, you are required to demonstrate third semester proficiency in a language. If you have already studied another language or if you are bilingual, I suggest you take a language placement test. Or, you can choose another core course such as Science, History, Literature, Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies, Ethics, or Visual and Performing Arts. There are also many 1-2 credit courses that you may like to consider. A College success course A Physical activity course You can get involved in play production Or you can join a choir or vocal group Once you have selected your classes, your schedule should resemble something like this. FALL: ECON 111, Composition, 2 Additional Core Courses SPRING: ECON 112, MATH 101, 1 Core Course, 1 Language Course If you are a transfer student, you may have completed some of these courses. It is important for you to review your degree evaluation to determine which courses you need to complete. One thing I would like to mention to transfer students is that if you have already taken calculus I, we can substitute this course for our required ECON 120 Economic Methods class. Please contact us if you have any questions about this. Spend some time navigating the Schedule of Classes to familiarize yourself with the layout. Look for courses that you would like to register for, including specific sections. Spend some time doing this to find a schedule that works for you. You should also keep a back up list in case some classes are closed. Once you have completed the quiz, you will be eligible to sign-up for classes when registration opens. After you register we will review the classes you have selected. If necessary, we will recommend course adjustments. If you need help, please contact us. economics@usfca.edu 415.422.2765 We look forward to meeting you during Orientation.
