Welcome to the Math Department. This video is going to outline the courses you should take for your first semester at USF. A student typically registers for 16-18 credits per semester. Four, 4 credit courses and perhaps 1 or 2 credits of extracurricular activities. Before you select and register for your classes, you should take the online USF Math Diagnostic Test. You need to take this test unless you meet one of these exceptions. SAT/ACT Exception:ÊIf you have submitted to USF an SAT Math score of at least 500 or an ACT Math score of at least 19, then you may register for MATH 102, 105, 107, or 108 without taking the Math Diagnostic Test. You must still take the Math Diagnostic Test for placement into MATH 109. AP/IB Exception:ÊYou do not need to take the Math Diagnostic Test if you have an AP or IB score that qualifies onÊthis pageÊfor MATH 109 credit. In addition, if you have an AP Precalculus score of at least 4, you do not need to take the Math Diagnostic Test. Students with AP Precalculus credit should emailÊmathematics@usfca.eduÊto register for MATH 109 (or any other course in the list above). College Credit Exception:ÊIf you received a grade of C- or higher in a College Algebra course at an accredited college or university, then you may register for MATH 102, 105, 107, or 108 without taking the Math Diagnostic Test. If you received a grade of C- or higher in a Precalculus or Calculus course at an accredited college or university, then you may register for any course in the list above without taking the Math Diagnostic Test. If you do not meet one of these exceptions, then the math class you register for will be based on your score from the math diagnostic test. If you score 61 or higher, you may register for MATH 108 Pre-calculus. If you score 76 or above, you may register for MATH 109 Calculus I. If you received a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB Advanced Placement Test or if you have taken Calculus I at another institution, you should take Math 110, Calculus and Analytic Geometry II and CS 110, Introduction to Computer Science I. Or, if you received a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC Advanced Placement Test, you should take Math 211, Calculus and Analytic Geometry III, and Math 230 Linear Algebra. For your next course, you should register for a Composition course. Developing good writing and speaking skills is essential to your success in the classes you will take at USF. Remember to complete the Directed Self Placement so you know which Rhetoric and Composition course to register for. Here are some options for your remaining classes: Computer Science 110. Mathematics majors must take at least one computational course, and CS 110 is a great way to fulfill this requirement. A foreign language. As a math major, you are required to demonstrate second semester proficiency in a foreign language. I recommend that you start early to complete this requirement. You can enroll in Public Speaking which is an important course to take early in your college career. This course fulfills your Core A1 requirement. Or, you can choose another core course such as Literature, History, Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies, Ethics, Social Science or Visual and Performing Arts. Once you have selected your classes, your schedule should resemble something like this [moment of silence]. MATH 109: Calculus and Analytic Geometry I Core or Rhetoric and Composition course Core or Language course Core course Or for Transfers [moment of silence]: MATH 110: Calculus and Analytic Geometry II CS 110: Computer Science I RHET 250: Academic Writing at USF Core or Language course If you are a transfer student, you may have completed some of these courses. It is important for you to review your degree evaluation to determine which courses you need to complete.
