Hello, I am Devan Robertson from the School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of San Francisco. Allow me to extend a warm welcome to all freshmen students who have been admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Congratulations! This video will help you select the courses you need to take during your first semester at USF. Freshman students can expect to complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree requirements in eight semesters. You will begin your first nursing clinical course in your third semester here at USF. Please refer to the USF School of Nursing and Health Professions Bachelor of Science in Nursing Curriculum Pattern while I talk about the courses you will need. This curriculum pattern is available on our website. You might want to print it so you can easily refer to it when need be. As a freshman, for your first semester you should register for a minimum of seventeen credits: three four-credit courses, a minimum of four elective credits, and a one-credit nursing course. You should choose to take ONE of the following clinical prerequisite sequences in your first semester (be sure to register for the lecture and lab for each Biology course) Biology 134 and 135: Microbiology Lecture and Lab AND Psychology 101: General Psychology; OR Biology 113 and 114: Human Anatomy Lecture and Lab AND Biology 115 and 116: Survey of Human Physiology Lecture and Lab. Please remember that each of these biology courses is composed of a lecture and a lab, which you must register for at the same time, as they are co-requisites. An appropriate number of seats in each of these two possible sequences are reserved for nursing students. Please remember that all three biology courses and General Psychology must be completed with a grade of C or better before you can begin your actual nursing courses in the third semester, or your first sophomore semester. So, for those of you that take Anatomy and Physiology in your first semester, you will then need to take Microbiology and General Psychology in your second semester. For those of you that take Microbiology and General Psychology in your first semester, you will need to take Anatomy and Physiology in your second semester. For your next course, we recommend that you register for a Written Communication, otherwise known as Rhetoric & Composition, course. Developing good writing skills are essential to your success in all the classes you will take at USF. You will need to complete the Directed Self Placement for Rhetoric. You should also take a four-credit core course in your first semester. For those of you taking Anatomy and Physiology in semester one, you have the option of taking PSYC 101: General Psychology, as your core course. Otherwise, you can take any core course that is needed; please be sure to check your degree evaluation before registering in order to determine which core courses are needed. Finally, you should register for a one-credit course for new nursing students. This course is called Nursing 120: Nursing in the Jesuit Tradition Iî. Once you have selected your classes, your schedule should look something like this. Biology 134 and 135 Microbiology Lecture and Lab Psychology 101 General Psychology NURS 120 Nursing in the Jesuit Tradition I Rhetoric and Composition course Core course OR Biology 113 and 114 Human Anatomy Lecture and Lab Biology 115 and 116 Survey of Human Physiology Lecture and Lab.
