Hi, welcome to USF. My name is Noopur Agarwal, I am a professor in the design program and I am also the program director of the design program. In the following video, you will learn a little bit about how to register and what classes might be the most appropriate for you when you register. So, know that we are here for you should you have any questions and that we are so, so looking forward to working with you. Welcome to the Design major. This tutorial will give you an overview of the classes you should register for.Ê A student typically registers for 16-18 credits per semester.Ê This includes four, 4 credit courses and, for interested students 1 or 2 credits of extracurricular activities. The first class you should take is ART 140 Ð Design Fundamentals. This studio class is essential to take, as itÕs a prerequisite to almost all future design classes.Ê The next class you should take is a history class. Please register for one of the following classes: ART 110 - History of Western Design; ART101 - Survey of Western Art History I (a Fall only class), or ART102 - Survey of Western Art History II (a Spring only class). Completion of any of these courses will fulfill your Core F: Visual and Performing Arts requirement. If more than one section of any of these courses appears in the schedule of classes, you may choose whichever section works best for you. If you are not able to register for Design Fundamentals, History of Western Design, or Survey of Western Art History I or II because of time restrictions or if the courses are full, there are several other options. Here are some suggestions: You can register for a Composition course. Developing good writing and speaking skills is essential to your success in the classes you will take at USF.Ê Make sure to complete the Directed Self Placement to determine which class you should register for.Ê You may choose to enroll in a first-year seminar or a transfer year seminar.Ê These seminars serve as a great introduction to the academic environment at USF and they will also fulfill a Core requirement.Ê You may choose to enroll in a foreign language course.Ê As a Design major, you are required to demonstrate 3rd semester proficiency in a foreign language.Ê I recommend that you start early to complete this requirement.ÊÊ You can enroll in Public Speaking which is an important course to take early in your college career.Ê This course fulfills your Core A1 requirement.Ê ÊYou can also choose another Core course such as Math, Science, History, Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies or Ethics. Your Core F Visual and Performing Arts requirement will be automatically covered in the course of your major studies so donÕt select one from this area. If it interests you, there are also many 1-2 credit courses that you may like to consider.Ê Our own department hosts a 1-unit class titled ART 240, The Art + Architecture Lecture Series, where students get to hear from artists, designers, curators, and architects working in San Francisco about their practices.Ê Other 1-2 unit courses you may consider are:Ê A College success course or USF 101 A Physical activity course A Computer Science course You can get involved in play production Or you can join a choir or vocal group Once you have selected your classes, your schedule should resemble something like thisÉ.
