Hi and welcome to USFs Sociology department, we are so pleased to have you. My name is Josh Gamson and I am the current Chair of the Sociology department. In what follows, my colleague Dr. Evelyn Rodriguez will walk you through the process of choosing courses for the upcoming semester. We are here to help you so do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions after watching the video. Hi, I'm Evelyn Rodriguez, and I am going to help you select your classes. A student typically registers for 16-18 credits per semester. Four, 4 credit courses and perhaps 1 or 2 credits of extracurricular activities. The first class you should sign up for is Introduction to Sociology. This is a required course for the major and it fulfills the Core E Social Sciences requirement. Transfer students who have already taken this course at another institution do not have to take it again. For your next course, you should register for a Composition course. Developing good writing and speaking skills is essential to your success in the classes you will take at USF. You should know which class to register for. If you do not, please review the chapter on Rhetoric and Composition. If you are a freshman student, you need to complete your Core A2 Rhetoric and Composition requirement before the end of your sophomore year. This requirement often takes two semesters to complete. If you are a transfer student and have passed a composition course at your transfer institution with a grade of C- or better, you should register for Sociology 297, Writing in Sociology, in your first semester. Sociology 297 fulfills the Core A2 Rhetoric and Composition requirement for transfer students. Transfer students sometimes find that the system will not let them register for the class. If this happens to you, please contact the Sociology department. Here are some options for your remaining class: A first-year seminar or a transfer student seminar. These seminars serve as a great introduction to the academic environment at USF and will fulfill a Core requirement. A foreign language. As a Sociology major, you are required to take three semesters of a foreign language. I recommend that you start early to complete this requirement. If you are fluent in another language or bilingual, you should contact the Languages department for additional guidance. You can enroll in Public Speaking which is an important course to take early in your college career. This course fulfills your Core A1 requirement. You may also consider an introductory course for a possible minor. Sociology majors can declare a minor in any subject that interests them. There are a wide variety of minors to choose from. For example, Sociology students have declared minors in Gender & Sexualities, Criminal Justice and African American Studies. Or, you can choose another core course such as Literature, History, Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies, Ethics, or Visual and Performing Arts. There are also many 1-2 credit courses that you may like to consider. A college success course, A physical activity course, A computer Science course You can get involved in play production, Or you can join a choir or vocal group Once you have selected your classes, your schedule should resemble something like this SOC 150: Intro to Sociology RHET 110: Written Communication I LANGUAGE: Select the first semester of the language of your choice CORE class Or for Transfers: SOC 306: Sociology Theory SOC 297: Writing in Sociology LANGUAGE: Select a semester of the language of your choice CORE class If you are a transfer student, you may have completed some of these courses. It is important for you to review your degree evaluation to determine which courses you need to complete. You can also contact the Sociology Department with any questions. Spend some time navigating the Schedule of Classes to familiarize yourself with the layout. Look for courses that you would like to register for, including specific sections. Spend some time doing this to find a schedule that works for you. You should also keep a back up list in case some classes are closed. If you need help, please contact the Sociology Department. sociology@usfca.edu 415.422.6671 Once you have completed the quiz, you will be eligible to sign-up for classes when registration opens.
