Postdoctoral Fellowship Training Program

Program Update

The USF Counseling and Psychological Services is not accepting applications for the Post Doctoral Fellowship program for the 2024-2025 training year.

We continue with a hybrid of on-site and remote service for the 2023-2024 training year. Like all CAPS staff psychologists, the Post Doctoral Fellows are located in the Bay Area, providing teletherapy from their homes, participating in telesupervision/teleseminars, and providing clinical services from the CAPS offices. The number of hours devoted to weekly training remains unchanged, and fellows are receiving the required number of supervision hours through telesupervision (in accordance with the California Board of Psychology) and participating in seminars and training through videoconferencing. We continue to monitor changes due to the pandemic and will make future adjustments in accordance with San Francisco County, the State of California, and University policies while maintaining a strong fellowship program that meets our training aims. The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty is of utmost importance.

While faculty and staff are not required to be vaccinated for COVID-19, it is highly encouraged to be fully up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters when eligible.  Vaccination including the booster dose is a vital tool to reduce the presence and severity of COVID-19 cases in the workplace and in our communities as a whole. For all current employees who have stated that they are fully vaccinated, the university requires proof of vaccination through a vaccine attestation form.  This includes employees working remotely. All submitted information is confidential and managed under the university’s data security systems.

Welcome

We are pleased to announce the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Service Psychology at the University of San Francisco Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) for the 2023–2024 training year and hope this website provides helpful information about our training program, application procedures, selection process, and the multicultural diversity of our University and center. We believe our strong commitment to multiculturally informed training and evidence-based practice will provide an exceptional opportunity for your development as a Health Service Psychologist within a university counseling center.

Training Program

USF CAPS provides postdoctoral training in Health Service Psychology (HSP) in a university counseling center context.  Our fellowship emphasizes training in brief, time-limited therapy and multicultural competency within an integrationist framework. Our strong commitment to training includes participation of all clinical staff who represent a diversity of theoretical and cultural backgrounds.  (Please see CAPS Diversity Statement.) The USF-CAPS Post Doctoral Fellowship is an APPIC member program.

The training program assists fellows in enhancing and consolidating knowledge and skills while providing didactic and experiential opportunities that facilitate development of professional identities as psychologists. CAPS is consistent with USF’s core value of having a commitment to the “full, integral development of each person,” by providing a training program that supports the development of ethical, competent psychologists who can function independently and make positive contributions to the profession.  Best described as a practitioner model, an emphasis is placed upon grounding clinical practice in theory and research while engaging in professional mentoring relationships with supervising psychologists.  We provide intensive supervision, multifaceted didactic training, and a broad range of outreach and consultation opportunities.

CAPS is committed to a brief, time-limited therapy approach to clinical practice that is grounded in evidence-based treatment. We are committed to assisting fellows in developing their own perspectives toward brief therapy and moving closer to the integration of evidence-based frameworks and methods with the goal of preparation for a Health Service Psychologist position in a university counseling center. Fellows continue to enhance and solidify the development of clinical skills required for the professional practice of health service psychology with advanced training and supervision in brief, time-limited individual psychotherapy, group therapy, crisis intervention and management, on-call coverage, clinical assessment and intake evaluation, consultation, outreach program development and delivery, and committee work.

Fellows further develop their understanding of and sensitivity to individual and cultural diversity, and integrate such understanding into all forms of service delivery.  In addition, fellows acquire greater awareness and competence in program development and/or program evaluation, supervision, the application of ethical principles and laws, and the advancement of a professional identity as a psychologist.

The overarching aims of the training program are to: (1) Enhance and consolidate core clinical and counseling skills for entry level independent practice in Health Service Psychology; and (2) Foster attitudes and behaviors which strengthen a professional identity as a psychologist. Please see the Postdoctoral Fellowship Brochure
