Scholarships & Funding Opportunities

There are multiple scholarship opportunities available for students studying abroad during Academic Year 2024-2025, Fall 2024, Summer 2024,  including program specific scholarships:

• BU Internships - Deadline: May 1st.
•  School for International Training (SIT) - Deadline: April 1st for summer, May 15 for fall programs.
• School for Field Studies (SFS) - Early submissions are encouraged, as aid is subject to the availability of funds. Review begins in April.

General study abroad scholarships:

• Fund for Education Abroad- February 7 at 9am PST.
• Gilman Scholarship - March 7 at 11:59pm PST.
• Diverse International Women of Color - July, exact date TBA.
• First Trip Scholarship- rolling admissions.

• Gilman Scholarship  - For recipients of a Federal Pell Grant. Deadlines are in October and March every year.
• Gilman- McCain Scholarship - for children or dependents of active or activated U.S. military members. Deadlines are in August and October every year.
• Boren Awards for International Study - Open to studies in regions critical to U.S. interests
• Freeman-Asia  - For students who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia
• Fund for Education Abroad - For students studying abroad for the short term, a summer, or a semester. Please refer to website for deadlines.

• First Trip Scholarship- For first-time travelers to eligible nontraditional destinations.
• AIFS Semester & Summer Scholarships  - International, Diversity, Study Again, & Affiliate Scholarships. Open to AIFS admitted students.
• Arcadia Scholarships - Open to Arcadia admitted students.
• Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ) Bridging Project Scholarship - Open to students studying abroad to Japan IES Scholarships & Aid
• Boren Awards for International Study- Open to studies in regions critical to U.S. interests.
• Boston University Scholarships & Grants - Merit, need based, & program specific. Open to BU admitted students.
• Bridging Foundation - For U.S. citizen undergraduate students studying abroad in Japan for one or two semesters
• BUTEX Scholarships - Open to undergraduate students who are affiliated to a BUTEX Full Member institution (eligibility can be found on website)
• CEA Scholarships  - Merit & need based. Open to CEA admitted students.
• CIEE Scholarships  - Open to CIEE admitted students.
• DAAD Scholarships  - German Academic Exchange Students
• IES Scholarships & Aid- Merit & need based, summer, semester, diversity, public university, disability. Open to IES admitted students.
• ISA  - Open to admitted students
• Loyola University Chicago (LUC) Vietnam Center - Open to eligible students admitted to the Vietnam Center
• MEXT Japanese Government Scholarships- The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students from around the world the opportunity to live and study in Japan. Unlike most other scholarships, MEXT scholarships are full scholarships that cover tuition, living expenses and roundtrip airfare. There are scholarships available for Graduate and Undergraduate students.

• Diverse International Women of Color- DIWC mission is to inspire, encourage and promote opportunities for women of color to travel abroad, experience different cultures and broaden their horizons beyond the United States.
• Hispanic Study Abroad Scholars - Over $8 Million in scholarships for Hispanic study abroad. The HSAS Scholarship offers $1,000 per semester to students of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) attending Global Learning Semesters programs.
• National Security Education Program (NSEP) David Boren Scholarships - Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.
• The Rainbow Scholarship -  The Rainbow Scholarship awards deserving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students who aim to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs.
• Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships - The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.
