Organization bio:

Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s mission is to foster artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works of music and dance; and to share the excitement of this exchange with diverse audiences in California, the US, and abroad. Gamelan Sekar Jaya (GSJ) is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to the study and presentation of traditional and contemporary Balinese performing arts. As performers, we strive to present this living tradition with integrity and excellence. As students, we commit ourselves to continual learning, with respect for the subject matter and our teachers. Our learning community is accessible to the public through workshops, classes, lectures, and outreach activities. We recognize that a broad understanding of Balinese culture is indispensable to our work. As in Bali, a sense of community drives our activities, from organizational operations to ensemble unity in performance. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, and we encourage their artistic contributions alongside those of our Balinese guest artists. We also collaborate with world-renowned artists from other cultures. GSJ finds continual inspiration in the world of Balinese performing arts. Together with our friends and supporters, we look for ways to share that excitement with as many people as possible.
