Zen & Sound Workshop

Sunday, September 27 8:30 AM - 4:15 PM

Kalmanovitz Hall — 367 - Presentation Classroom

Speakers Geoff Ashton and Bethany Howlett will lead this event. The workshop introduces participants to the theory and practice of zazen (Zen seated meditation) and the significance of vocal training (or chanting) for Zen training. This event will be participatory: in addition to zazen and vocal training, we may experiment with other Zen training methods, including walking meditation, Taiji, and TRE (Trauma and Tremor Releasing Exercises). Led by Bethany Howlett (Rinzai Zen Priest, Doctor of Medicine, University of Wisconsin) and Geoff Ashton (Rinzai Zen Priest, Professor of Asian Philosophy, University of San Francisco). What to Bring: Comfortable clothes for light exercise and sitting cross-legged, water bottle, and 3-4 towels (for setting your meditation cushion). Lunch provided by USF and served from 12:30-1:30 pm.
