The Process for Applying to Fellowships
Before the application opens: research fellowships you are interested in, view the eligibility requirements, and identify faculty mentors who may have more information and know about the fellowship opportunities in your field.
Make a plan to complete the application:
- Generally you want to start planning and working on the application at least two months in advance.
- Note major deadlines, and plan a timeline to complete application drafts
- If it is a fall deadline, start drafting and asking for endorsement and recommendations in the Summer
- Have regular contact with faculty mentors and plan to spend about a month updating and revising your application.
Etiquette of Asking for Recommendation Letter
- Identify a professor, mentor, or supervisor who would be able to attest to your experience, qualifications, and character.
- Request a letter of recommendation no less than one month from the due date of the application. The earlier the better.
- Schedule office hours or write an email and include information about the fellowship, how they can turn in the recommendation, and provide them with a resume and any writing samples that will be part of your application.
