Reporting to the associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students and serving on the dean of students’ executive leadership team (“dean team”), this assistant dean oversees a portfolio of five departments: the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success, the Margaret Sloss Center for Women & Gender Equity, the Veterans Center, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, and the Hixon Opportunity Awards Program and National Student Exchange Office. The assistant dean of students for intercultural initiatives and resource centers & director of the office of multicultural student affairs is responsible for the development and delivery of programs and support services which foster student success, satisfaction, and enhancement of the university experience foundationally established from a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) lens. Emphasis is placed on implementation of a comprehensive programmatic and support services strategy designed to increase the recruitment, retention, and ultimate graduation of Iowa State students identified as under-represented and/or marginalized. This population of students includes, but is not limited to first generation students, Veterans and military-affiliated students, students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, women, students from low in-come backgrounds and ethnic identities that include African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American, Latinx, Native American/Alaskan Native, or Multiracial.

Qualifications and Characteristics

A bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of related professional experience are required. A master’s degree is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess experience working directly with students from marginalized/underrepresented backgrounds and identities; experience advising college student and student organizations with an emphasis in culturally and identity-based groups; and an understanding of, and commitment to, the practical application of student development theories/research and equity, diversity, and inclusion work with a focus on underrepresented student recruitment, development, and retention. In addition, experience with supervision of professional staff and student crisis management within a student affairs organization are preferred.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Community Life and, the Senior Assistant Dean and Director of the Office of Pluralism and Leadership (OPAL) directs the efforts of the staff in advising, mentoring, and counseling students on a wide variety of academic, personal, social, cultural, career, and community concerns. The Senior Assistant Dean and Director is responsible for leading an office of 12 full-time staff, overseeing a budget of $1.28M, securing critical resources and stewarding gifts and endowments, providing project management infrastructure, and encouraging innovation. Further, the Senior Assistant Dean and Director has responsibility for communicating progress, trends, and pertinent data via reports and presentations to internal and external audiences, establishing departmental priorities, and implementing campus-wide programs and services informed by the best available evidence and research. The Senior Assistant Dean and Director is the point of contact for student-focused diversity and inclusion initiatives and provides leadership for on-campus student-led diversity and inclusion projects. Additionally, they promote utilizing appropriate assessment techniques to measure initiatives’ effects and outcomes to inform program and policy development and training of students.

The Senior Assistant Dean and Director partners with the Associate Dean of Community Life and Inclusivity in identifying and addressing student and community needs, serving as a divisional resource on campus climate and diversity issues, and collaborating with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity (IDE) and campus colleagues. The Senior Assistant Dean and Director contributes to the Dartmouth community by building effective partnerships across campus to mobilize the community in efforts to enhance cultural competence and inclusion. They also work with the campus, local, regional, and national networks to identify emerging trends, adopt best practices, and deliver effective diversity, inclusion, cultural competence, and social justice programs.

Additionally, the Senior Assistant Dean and Director will:

  • Build a culture of trust, collaboration, and partnership in fostering an environment where all students can thrive, value difference, and contribute to creating a socially just world.
  • Develop and prioritize comprehensive and ongoing program evaluation to ensure OPAL delivers evidence-based premium support systems.
  • Manage and provide administrative leadership to the Office of Pluralism and Leadership: hire, train, supervise, and evaluate full-time professional staff, oversee event management, maintain the website, create marketing materials, and manage related facilities.
  • Partner with colleagues to identify and develop clear, research-based, developmentally appropriate outcomes for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) support and educational programming to move from awareness to behavioral and cultural transformation.
  • Provide leadership and strategic oversight for international student support, workshop development, student organization advisement, and campus programming.
    • Work collaboratively with Admissions, New Student Programs, and First-Year Initiatives in serving and supporting the transition of historically underrepresented student populations.
  • Provide executive oversight of advising for OPAL-affiliated student organizations, including the umbrella organization for identity-based organizations on Dartmouth’s campus.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and serve on corresponding committees in the planning and implementing of campus-wide diversity and inclusiveness programming.
  • Initiate new and support ongoing programming which elevates the needs and experiences of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and first-gen students, while strengthening educational opportunities that demonstrate the importance of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging among all Dartmouth students.
  • Provide direct advocacy and support to individual students, including general counseling/mentoring and referral to other established support services on campus, and develop the appropriate information channels to inform historically underrepresented student populations of scholarships, internships, extra-curricular activities, employment opportunities, and other events as appropriate.
  • Serve as the fiscal officer for the OPAL budgets, ensuring compliance with all fiduciary commitments and budgetary obligations.
  • Serve on committees and task forces as needed and perform other duties to support the college’s mission, including, but not limited to student affairs leadership team.

As a part of the country’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university reporting to the President’s Office through the Division of Student Affairs, the Center for Social Justice (CSJ) animates the University’s Jesuit values and mission through its work in research, teaching, and service. The Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy (DoESP) grew out of CSJ’s previous positions of Director of Research and Evaluation and, before that, Evaluation Specialist. In this iteration, the DoESP oversees and leads the CSJ’s research and teaching pillars of work and accompanying portfolio of programming utilizing our preferred applied pedagogies: immersion,dialogue, community-engaged teaching, and community-based research. The DoESP serves on the Center’s leadership team and has a visible and vocal presence on the University’s “Main Campus” as the CSJ supports our University’s commitment to engaged scholarship and pedagogies for social change. 

This position comes with an affiliated Assistant Teaching Professor title with a 3-year renewable term.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Ph.D., Ed.D. or terminal degree required

• Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a higher education setting (This time can overlap

with the applicant’s post-graduate education.)

• Strong record of and commitment to engaged scholarship and/or advocacy-based

research, pedagogies for social change, and/or a mission-driven higher education

experience

• Demonstrated experience leading co-curricular, experiential learning activities, including

familiarity with content creation and curation, logistics, compliance, risk, and basic

budgeting

• Experience working with higher education students and familiarity with university culture

About the Position

The role of the founding President/CEO of Cristo Rey Seattle will be critical in establishing the culture of the school as well as its role in the greater Seattle community. The President/CEO will be responsible for hiring the initial leadership team in 2023, completing the Quarterly Benchmark formation process, and opening the school in the Summer of 2024.

The President/CEO will be hired by, and report to, Cristo Rey Seattle’s Board of Directors. Position Purpose: The classroom teacher is responsible for all aspects of creating a dynamic learning environment for students in the class.

Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees:

Essential Functions

  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.

  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.

Qualifications

  • A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based in it.

  • Master’s degree or post graduate work in education, will consider a BA degree with a teaching credential and 10 years of recent, relevant experience.

  • A minimum of 3 years as a lead teacher in an independent school environment.

  • Willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute ideas to enhance the respective academic programs. 

  • Strong teaching ability; enjoy working with children. 

  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English. Additional skills in Spanish strongly preferred.

Each semester, https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/issues offers internships to young writers, journalists, scholars, theologians, creatives, and critics. This year, in anticipation of our centennial in 2024, Commonweal is excited to offer specific internships related to new undertakings. We are currently seeking an Archival Editorial Intern and a Marketing Intern for the spring of 2023.

Commonweal interns always have the opportunity to explore Commonweal’s editorial, marketing, development, and digital work, depending on their interest and background. Responsibilities include:

  • Proofreading, copyediting, fact-checking
  • Writing original content (including reviews, essays, commentary)
  • Preparing content for use in marketing platforms and an online content management system (CMS)
  • Assisting in editorial, planning, and production of The Commonweal Podcast
  • Creating social media copy for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

These are paid internships at $15/hour, with flexible start and end dates. They can be full-time (Monday through Thursday), part-time, or remote, depending on the candidates' availability.

Qualified candidates from undergraduate and graduate programs in any discipline are encouraged to apply.
