Dear USF Community,
We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Michael Emanuel, a student in the 4+1 program in applied economics.
Michael was well respected and admired by faculty, students, and staff as evidenced by their touching sentiments:
"The economics faculty and staff are all shaken by this loss. Michael was our student for several years, both as an undergraduate and graduate student. We valued and respected his intelligence, self-discipline, and kindness. The other students enjoyed his sense of humor and his commitment to helping others whether as a TA or just as a classmate, even if it meant staying up past midnight to help someone understand a concept." – Associate Professor Peter Lorentzen
"Michael was among the best students I've worked with during my time at USF. Not only was he smart and hardworking, but he was exceptionally kind and helpful to his fellow students. I consistently saw him putting significant time and energy both in and outside of class sessions helping classmates understand difficult concepts or improve their projects. For me it was an honor to work with Michael both as a student and as a TA over several semesters, and I am confident his other teachers and fellow students feel the same way." – Assistant Professor Andrew Hobbs
"Michael had been my student in four separate classes. He was smart, hardworking, polite, and personable. We would often chat about Italy, current events, and international soccer. It’s hard to grapple with this loss." – Assistant Professor Mario Muzzi
His family has shared this statement with the community:
“Michael was kind, intelligent, driven, and devoted to his family and his faith. He was larger than life both physically and in the impact he made in the lives of those he touched. We ask that you say a prayer for Michael and keep him in your hearts and minds.”
Plans for an on-campus memorial service will be announced in the fall.
We hold Michael Emanuel and his family and friends in our prayers.
