Music Minor
About the Music Minor
The Music Minor offers students a foundation for engaging with music in our changing world, providing technical training, room for personal exploration and artistic expression, and the social and historical context in which music is made. No prior experience is necessary — the minor is designed to welcome students at all levels.
The goal of the minor is to develop musicians who are not only technically competent and versatile, but who have also explored the conceptual, compositional, and creative processes underlying music as an artistic form.
Music Foundation Classes
Students new to music study may begin with Intro to Music Theory (MUS 100), Music & Social History (MUS 180) or Western Music Appreciation (MUS 101). Advanced coursework open to minors includes songwriting and music technology.
Music & Culture Classes
Music & Culture courses explore the relationship between music, identity, and social justice. Offerings include Jazz, Culture & Social Justice (MUS 202); Music and Social Protest (MUS 203); Music & Queer Community in SF (MUS 216), Anthropology of Music (MUS/ANTH 205), among others. Several of these courses fulfill USF Core requirements.
