Public Safety Reminder: Secure Windows and Doors

Dear USF Community,

As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming campus environment, the Department of Public Safety would like to remind all members of our community to remain mindful of securing their personal residences and workspaces.

We ask everyone, particularly those occupying ground-floor, first-floor and second-floor spaces, to take a moment to ensure windows and doors are properly secured when leaving an area unattended.

A few simple precautions can make a meaningful difference:

  • Secure windows and doors: Ensure all windows and doors are fully closed and locked when leaving your room, office, or workspace, even if you anticipate being away for only a short time.
  • Be mindful of open windows: If you choose to keep windows open for ventilation, please remember to close and secure them before stepping away or leaving the area.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings: Be attentive to unfamiliar activity around residential and campus spaces, and do not hesitate to report anything that seems unusual or concerning.
  • See Something, Say Something: If you observe suspicious activity, an unfamiliar individual attempting to access a secured space, or anything that seems out of place, please report it to Public Safety. Your awareness and willingness to speak up help us respond and support the safety of our community.
  • Protect building access: Do not allow people you do not know to “tailgate” or follow you into secured buildings. If something does not feel right, do not provide access and contact Public Safety.
  • Report Maintenance Concerns: If you notice anything broken, damaged, or in need of repair, please contact Public Safety. Our team can promptly report the issue to the appropriate department and help ensure it receives an immediate response.

Campus safety is a shared responsibility, and small, proactive steps can go a long way in helping protect our community, personal belongings, and shared spaces.

The Department of Public Safety remains committed to supporting the safety and well-being of everyone on our campus. If you observe suspicious activity or have a safety concern, please contact Public Safety Dispatch at 415-422-4201. If you are in an emergency situation please contact Public Safety Dispatch at 415-422-2911. If you are at one of our additional campus locations, please be sure to contact your local law enforcement agency or dial 911.

Thank you for your continued attentiveness, partnership, and care for one another.

Stay Safe & Well,

Department of Public Safety
