Job Description:

The chief mission and identity officer (CMO) has special care for the development of the school’s Catholic, Jesuit mission and identity, in coordination with the president and divisional administrators, and reporting to the president. The key dimensions of the position are pastoral care and formation of the SJC community, as well as the administrative leadership to support that ministry. The position is a new one at SJC and continues to evolve as St. John’s College continues to adapt and deepen in its commitments as a Jesuit, Catholic educational institution. It is also a position with parallel in Belize. As such, it is understood that the CMO will require accompaniment, mentorship, and formation in transitioning into the position.

Qualifications and Experience:

▪  Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Theology, or equivalent education and experience

▪  At least 5 years work experience at a Jesuit or Catholic secondary or tertiary education institution

▪  Knowledge of and personal experience with Catholic and Jesuit traditions, with preference for experiences

of the Spiritual Exercises

▪  Experience coordinating or directing faculty development programs, faith development and/or ministry

programs.

Key Roles:

▪  Develop and implement St. John’s College’s strategic plan for Mission and Identity and assess its outcomes.

▪  Initiate the academic, co-curricular, professional and spiritual formation of the SJC community, including trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni, to deepen their understanding of the college’s Catholic

and Jesuit Identity, educational mission, and their vocation within it.

▪  Supervise campus ministry for all divisions of the school, ensuring the pastoral care and formation of

students of the University, Junior College and High School.

▪  Coordinate, in consultation with the president, with SJC’s Jesuit and Catholic partners to support the

Catholic, Jesuit mission and identity of the school, including the Belize Jesuit Community, Jesuits of the

UCS Province, AJCU, JSN, and the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan.

▪  Develop and lead mission and identity dimensions of New Employee Orientation programs.

▪  Prepare quarterly Mission and Identity reports for the President and Mission & Identity Committee of the

Board of Trustees.

▪  Lead mission and identity office, including preparing its budget.

Position Summary

The University Minister for Liturgy and Spirituality promotes the University’s Catholic, Jesuit, and Mercy mission through coordination and facilitation of the liturgical and spiritual needs of the Detroit Mercy community. The primary responsibilities include outreach and spiritual formation of students, colleagues, and campus partners. Organizing and coordinating University Liturgies, Masses, and communal prayer services. Care for all sacred spaces on Detroit Mercy campuses, spiritual ministration for student athletes and graduate students.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. Coordinate the liturgical life of the University.

  • Organize the logistical needs of daily and Sunday Masses and collaborate with campus partners on university-wide liturgies and prayer services on each of Detroit Mercy’s campuses.
  • Coordinator of the Student Liturgical Team. This includes recruitment, formation, and coordination of student liturgical ministers.
  • Assist and maintain supplies in the sacristy of St. Ignatius Chapel on the McNichols campus and caretaker of the University chapels in Novi, Riverfront, Corktown.

2. Coordinate the sacramental life of the University

  • Collaborate with the local Jesuit parishes to coordinate and assist with the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) program.
  • Be available for the weekly administration of the sacrament of Reconciliation (confessions) or organize for a substitute when needed.

3. Offer pastoral and spiritual support programs on a regular basis for student athletes.

 

4. Coordinate weekly student faith-sharing groups, including forming student leaders.

 

5. Offer pastoral and spiritual support and coordinate programs for graduate students on all campuses.

 

6. Offer pastoral conversations, spiritual accompaniment, and vocational discernment with students, faculty, or staff as needed.

 

7. Attend weekly University Ministry Team meetings and have a bi-weekly check-in with the director.

 

8. Other duties as assigned by the Director of University Ministry.
 

Other potential university opportunities depending on the minister’s skills and availability:

  • Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate Ecumenical and Interfaith programs and events.
  • Coordinate special liturgies and religious services for Detroit Mercy alumni.
  • Be a part of the pastoral emergency response team to students in distress or crisis.
  • Facilitate and participate in programs such as retreats, discernment groups, or taskforces as needed.

Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree (MA) or equivalent in Catholic Theology, Spirituality, Religious Studies, Pastoral Studies, Divinity, or related field; a demonstrated record of at least three years work experience in Catholic Higher Education preferably at a Mercy or Jesuit institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Baptized practicing Catholic with a solid understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Preference for a Jesuit or a Catholic priest (Diocesan or Religious) in good standing with the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Preferred experience with young adult ministry or equivalent work experience.
  • Preferred experience with Microsoft Office, Canva or Blackboard; Making flyers; Facilitating Zoom meetings and use of social media.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Commitment to fostering and maintaining a culture of belonging, respect, understanding, and inclusivity in line with the Mercy and Jesuit values of respect for te dignity of all, embracing diverse cultures and faith traditions.
  • A valid motor vehicle license and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van are required.
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting: To stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 25lbs.; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to off-campus or other locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 25 lbs. to do manual labor projects, and travel long distances.

 

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

 

Licenses/Certifications

A valid motor vehicle license is required and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van.

The Executive Director will provide strategic and visionary leadership as SVDP-SF begins its 164th year of operations serving the most vulnerable members of the San Francisco community. Reporting to an accomplished and engaged Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be the public face of the organization. 

The Executive Director will provide strategic leadership, serve as the external spokesperson, and assume responsibility for growing the agency’s programs and diversifying revenue channels. This leader will take responsibility for leading all operations of the organization, and will partner with the Board of Directors on strategic planning, fundraising, and policy matters.

Founded in 1860, SVDP-SF has a long and respected history of service to the community’s most vulnerable citizens, those experiencing homelessness and those whose lives have been devastated by domestic violence. SVDP-SF provides food, clothing, shelter, and a wide range of support services that help stabilize their lives, overcome crises, and become self-sufficient. Men, women, and children who are poor, without housing, or torn apart by domestic violence, find hope and refuge everyday at SVDP-SF.

The Search Committee, chaired by board member Greg Bryan, selected the executive search firm of Stacy Nelson Associates, with managing partner Stacy Nelson leading the search. The firm’s recruitment team has decades of experience specializing in executive-level searches for nonprofits, and this “hands-on” experience will be crucial in the identification and onboarding the next Executive Director.
