Student Engagement

Sociology Student Ambassadors

Our SOC ambassadors play an integral role in our program's efforts to cultivate a sense of community with our students and faculty!  During the height of the pandemic, our SOC ambassadors connected with incoming students who were starting their college journey virtually and host virtual events to provide SOC students with a sense of community during such isolating times.

Q: Is there a required # of service hours for SOC Ambassadors?

A: No, there are no service hour requirements.  SOC Ambassadors have the chance to decide when and for how long they are able to support the SOC department during events, student activities, new student orientations, etc.  We are happy to have ambassadors' support at any capacity!

Q: What have SOC Ambassadors done in recent years?

A: SOC Ambassadors have served as peer mentors for incoming students, hosted virtual study sessions, conversation spaces, and events, and assisted the SOC department during student-facing events such as New Student Orientation, Dons Fest, and Major/Minor Fair.

Q: Is this a paid position/student employment opportunity?

A: No, this is not a paid position nor a student employment opportunity.

STEP (Sociologists Together Empowering People)

Please Note: STEP is not currently active as of 2025.  If you are interested in reviving the sTUDENT ORGANIZATION, EMAIL SOCIOLOGY@USFCA.EDU.

STEP (Sociologists Together Empowering People), the Sociology club at the University of San Francisco, was established in Spring 2011. STEP's main purpose is to create solidarity among individuals interested in sociology. The Club hopes to build a campus community for current and prospective Sociology majors and minors by providing students opportunities to network; to acquire information about graduate schools, internships, and jobs; and to build professional relationships with fellow students and faculty. STEP also aims to increase student civic engagement and promote social justice on campus and in our communities. Everyone is welcome to attend meetings and participate in the Club's activities.

Sociology Club Wins Excellence in Community Action Award!

The Sociology Department is proud to announce that our Sociology Club, Sociologists Together Empowering People, has won the 2014 Excellence in Community Action Award. The award honors STEP members for their contributions to the USF community. When they were informed of the prize, they were told that "the criteria for this award is a project that embodies the mission of the organization and USF with thoughtful intentions and reflection. The ASUSF Senate executives unanimously agreed to award your organization the highest level of excellence for your Community Action Project. Your project was impressive and you and your organization are more than deserving of this recognition."

This is the first year that the Excellence in Community Action award has been awarded. We are incredibly proud of the club members for winning this award!
