Partnership for Undergraduate Mentoring and Teaching (PUMT)
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
Partnership for Undergraduate Mentoring and Teaching
The University of San Francisco/University of California San Francisco Partnership for Undergraduate Mentoring and Teaching (PUMT) program was developed to address two objectives:
- Provide UCSF graduate students and post-doctoral researchers/clinicians with opportunities to teach and mentor undergraduate students
- Provide USF undergraduate science majors with highly qualified instructors for lecture and laboratory classes, and opportunities to gain research experience.
The Teaching Program
The teaching program offers opportunities for UCSF graduate students and postdoctoral researchers/clinicians to acquire teaching experience that will be helpful for future applications for faculty positions and other education-related career goals. Participants are hired as part time faculty who are mentored by full time USF faculty and through the UCSF Preparing Future Faculty program. In turn, USF students benefit by receiving instruction from highly qualified part time faculty. Part time teaching positions are announced through the UCSF Preparing Future Faculty Program listserv.
The Research Mentoring Program
The research mentoring program is designed to both enhance research experiences for USF science majors, and to provide UCSF graduate students and post doctoral researchers with opportunities to acquire undergraduate mentoring experience, as well as assistance with their research projects.
Research Opportunities
Research opportunities are posted on USF’s Canvas system at the Department of Biology Electronic Information Board. Biology students can be enrolled in this Canvas site to see announcements of new postings. Send a request from your USF e-mail account to Professor Karentz.
