Tips and Tricks for Tech Job Interviews

Are you applying for jobs or internships in tech right now? This can be a tough time to get into the tech industry. Here are some tips to consider:

  1. Don't limit your applications to just tech companies. Everybody, including non-tech companies, need tech. From department stores to non-profits to utility companies to start-ups. These positions can lead to roles in tech companies later in your career.
  2. Have you thought about Cybersecurity as a field? Cybersecurity is actively hiring. The Tech Partnerships Initiative is looking to bring more Cybersecurity to USF. Check out the newly formed Women in Tech Cybersecurity Subcommittee and their events below. Everyone is welcome! They are planning to start workshops on Security+. You can reach out to them at: cycommitteeusf@gmail.com In addition, we have two upcoming Cybersecurity talks. One for everyone and one for programmers. Please see our upcoming events section for more info. Please also see the resources below from Snyk Learn's University Program for Cybersecurity. They also have resources for AI.
  3. If you need practice for technical interviews, Women in Tech is running LeetCode sessions. Again, everyone is welcome. You can reach out to them here: wogrammersusfca@gmail.com You can also practice and run your own sessions too!
  4. Please consider joining the USF Alumni Engagement mentorship programs where students can be mentored by alumni! You can join the NetworkUSF platform with your LinkedIn account. It's open to all students and alumni as well as staff and faculty. There is also the Alumni Mentor Program. Student applications are currently closed but it’s a good thing to keep in mind for next time. Tech Partnerships will keep you updated on other mentoring programs as they come up.
  5. Go to speaker events, ask questions, connect with the speaker afterwards on Linkedin. Go to Career Fairs and conferences. Connect with recruiters. (If you haven’t updated your LinkedIn, please do so!)
  6. Have you considered applying for a job abroad? There are tech opportunities abroad and being young is a good time to explore a different culture and country. You can always return when the job market improves!
  7. Keep educating yourself on topics such as GenAI and Cybersecurity. Please our resources section for some resources on AI and Cybersecurity.
  8. Finally, be gentle with yourself. This is a tough time to be looking for tech jobs. It may take longer, and that's normal. Give yourself time to rest. If you're struggling, please reach out to USF Counseling and Psychological Services

At the Tech Partnerships Initiative, we are looking to find new ways to build relationships and opportunities in tech partnerships and build resources for students. Please watch for updates on social media and in our newsletters.
