Housing Accommodations

Student Housing works with Student Disability Services (SDS) to ensure that any and all accommodation requests are received. Students who need housing accommodations are advised to indicate the need for a disability related accommodation by answering the question on the housing application. Students must contact SDS and complete the intake and eligibility process to request a housing accommodation; answering the housing application question will not initiate the process.

How can students request a housing accommodation?

All housing accommodations are managed by the Student Disability Services (SDS) office. Students must first submit a request for services from the SDS office. The SDS website lists the eligibility process, which also includes submitting documentation and an intake appointment with an SDS Specialist.

Students who need an accommodation for their on-campus housing must also have submitted a housing application. The application for housing should be completed based on the student's classification at the university. As part of your application process, you can note the need for accommodations. It is incumbent on the student to work directly with SDS for any accommodation needed.

Housing accommodations are distinct from academic or classroom accommodations. While academic accommodations address barriers within the learning environment, housing accommodations address barriers related to a student’s ability to access and participate in the residential living environment.

Students who choose to live in university housing are expected to meet the essential components of communal residential living. These expectations support a safe, respectful, and functional community for all residents by upholding all University policies and regulations including the Fogcutter.

What types of accommodations have students received in the past?

Students have received the following types of accommodations:

  • ADA compliant bathroom
  • Access to private bathroom
  • Placement to a specific building
  • Single room
  • Lower occupancy room
  • Reduced meal plan
  • Service or Emotional Support Animal (ESA)

Service and Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)

No ESA may reside in University housing until the student has received written approval through Student Disability Services (SDS). Animals present prior to approval must be removed immediately and may result in disciplinary action.

Requests should be submitted as early as practicable, preferably at least 60 days prior to moving into University housing. Requests submitted fewer than 60 days in advance may delay implementation, and/or the request may not be approved until the following semester.

If the need arises after occupancy begins, students must contact SDS promptly. Approval is not guaranteed within the same semester.
