Graduate International Student Orientation Schedule

All new graduate students are required to attend their academic department orientation in addition to the International Student Orientation on Friday, August 16th. Please contact your department for more information about their orientation activities.

Status Verification

Complete your mandatory immigration document verification during one of times below. Bring your passport and certificates of eligibility to the following locations:

  • Aug 13th - 16th, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (UC 504)
  • Aug 19th - 23rd, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (UC 504)

Graduate International Student Orientation & Welcome Activities

Tuesday, August 13

International Student Move-In Day: All international students with confirmed on-campus housing may move in on this day.

Airport Shuttle Service: ISSS will a one-day transportation service from San Francisco Airport to USF. Prior online registration is required.

Welcome Center: Come visit us at the Welcome Center where there will be staff to provide move in assistance and answer your questions from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. All One Cards for international students who completed ID express will be distributed at the Welcome Center. University Center 1st Floor.

Wednesday, August 14

Resource Fair: One stop location for students to take care of immediate needs such as: setting up cell phones, bank accounts, questions about course registration and learn about other offices and services on campus. University Center 1st Floor, 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.

Immunization Clinic: MMR, TB, immunization record clearance. University Center 402/403, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

International Game Night: Join new students and the orientation guides for a casual game night. Feel free to bring a game to share! University Center 4th Floor, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Thursday, August 15

Campus Tour: Meet outside the Lone Mountain front entrance for a campus tour with the USF Admissions team. Lone Mountain, 10–11 a.m.

Library Orientation: Learn from your USF Librarians about the Gleeson Library Services. Meet in front of Gleeson Library, 11 a.m.–12 p.m.

JEEP Advising Lunch: Jesuit Education Exchange Program students are required to attend this lunch & special advising session. Cowell Room 317, 12–1 p.m.

Working & Driving in the U.S: Do you want to work on-campus or drive in the U.S.? Come learn the basics about getting a driver’s license and applying for a Social Security Number. University Center 4th Floor Lounge, 2–2:45 p.m.

San Francisco & Beyond: Learn about your new city and the many points of interest that California has to offer. University Center 4th Floor Lounge, 3-4 p.m. 

Off-Campus Dinner Excursion: Make new friends and explore a San Francisco neighborhood. Bring money, good walking shoes and warm clothes. Meet on the University Center 1st Floor, 5–8 p.m.

Friday, August 16

Graduate International Student Orientation: This mandatory session will provide important information about your visa category, academic success, cultural adjustment and more. McLaren Complex, 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

9:00 a.m. Registration Please arrive at 9:00 a.m. for orientation check-in. This is required
of all graduate students.
9:15 a.m. University Welcome Official welcome from the International Student and Scholar
Services offices at USF. 
9:40 a.m. Immigration Matters We will review extremely important information regarding your stay in the United States as an F-1/J-1 student such as the Status Verification process, registration and holds, travel & re-entry, maintaining status, working in the U.S., etc.
10:40 a.m. Break There will be a 10-minute break.
10:50 a.m. Academic Success & Cultural Adjustment Half our time together will be dedicated to issues of and strategies for cultural adjustment. The other half will focus on differences and expectations you will find in the U.S. classroom, including helpful tips for academic success while at USF.
11:20 a.m. Cultural Encounters This session will explore the cultural adjustment process and the issues and differences you may face.
11:50 a.m. Ice Breaker Get to know your fellow USF peers.
12:00 p.m. Campus Resources Select campus offices will share their resources for international students. This will include Health Promotion Services, Student Accounts, and Public Safety.
12:20 p.m. Final Remarks There is more info in your workbook!
12:30 p.m. Graduate Student Lunch Join fellow students at a complimentary lunch immediately following the Graduate Int’l Student Orientation.

San Francisco City Excursion: Explore the beautiful 49 square miles of the “City by the Bay” along with fellow USF international students in a fun and memorable activity. Meet in front of Memorial Gym on Golden Gate Avenue, 2:15–4:30 p.m. Interested students should register and purchase tickets by Thursday, August 15 on the RSVP page. 

Ice Cream & Social Night: Ice cream sundaes, singing, interactive games and new friends. University Center 4th Floor Lounge, 7–9 p.m.

Saturday, August 17

Immunization Clinic: Final chance for immunizations for MMR and Hepatitis B immunizations. University Center 402/403, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
