Daisy Award Nurses Logo

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem. The DAISY Foundation was formed by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease, in 1999. Touched by the care and compassion of the nurses caring for him, his family developed recognition programs to honor and celebrate direct care nurses, nursing faculty, and nursing students. Exceptionally skilled and compassionate nursing educators play a pivotal role in shaping the nursing workforce and setting an example for future nurses.

Exceptionally skilled and compassionate nursing educators play a pivotal role in shaping the nursing workforce and setting an example for future nurses.

Our SONHP educators disseminate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for future nurses to provide compassionate and complex care. SONHP wants to contribute to a healthy work and learning environment by recognizing your impact.

The landscape of nursing practice and education has evolved significantly. Nurses now practice across a broader, more complex, and ever-changing continuum. As a result, education begins in nursing schools and extends into various practice settings.

Nursing schools are where faculty and instructors launch undergraduates' careers and advance graduate students' skills. In healthcare organizations, clinical educators, nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners, mentors, and preceptors ensure that students, new graduates, and nurses transitioning into specialty practice are competent and confident in their skills. These educators also keep clinicians updated on evidence-based practice. All these roles are crucial in ensuring that the public receives care from educated, competent, and proficient nurses.

Undergraduate and graduate students, preceptors, residents, clinicians, and professionals across the spectrum of nursing education, from practical/vocational to advanced practice nurses, are encouraged to nominate educators committed to improving practice and advancing patient care. Colleagues of educators and students alike are invited to share compelling stories highlighting teaching, mentoring, compassion, and care.

Daisy Award Student Logo

The DAISY Nursing Students Award is designed to remind students why they want to be nurses even on the hardest days in nursing school. By recognizing nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families, we celebrate what it truly means to be a nurse.

We honor the nurse-patient connection that makes all the difference to patients and their families in their healthcare experience and makes great nurses genuinely great.
