A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia the morning of Aug. 10, sending people fleeing outdoors as the ground shook. The death toll has risen to 285, with more than 570 injured, and 379 missing.
Pope Leo XIV offered prayers “for the eternal rest of the deceased and raises prayers to the Lord for the speedy recovery of those affected by this tragedy.” The Jesuit university, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, is providing support to the communities affected by the emergency and has issued a call for donations to support victims.
“Our Ignatian network and the strong spirit of collaboration that connects our institutions can make a meaningful difference, and any support or further dissemination among your communities would be deeply appreciated,” said Giovanni Calvano, director of international affairs for Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.
