Information for Faculty and Staff

Disruptive behavior should be taken seriously and addressed as quickly as possible as it interferes with the learning process and educational mission of the University and may also be indicative of potential emotional, social or psychological issues on the part of the student who is acting out.

The Office of Student Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities (OSCRR) can assist Faculty and Staff regarding disruptive and inappropriate behavior. Faculty or Staff should contact OSCRR, located in the University Center, 5th floor or at 422-5330, with any questions or concerns regarding student behavioral issues.

Disruptive Behavior and Disciplinary Action

If your requests to the student to change behavior prove futile, you should contact OSCRR to file an Incident Report. If you are concerned for your or other individuals' safety, you should immediately contact Public Safety at x2911.

When a report is filed with OSCRR, the conduct process will commence. If a student is found responsible for disruptive or disorderly behavior, sanctions may include disciplinary probation, a behavior contract concerning the class, anger management counseling or other educational interventions, or, in more severe cases, removal from the class (in these cases, OSCRR will work collaboratively with the School or College).

Disruptive behavior can assume many forms. It may be:

• students who talk continuously throughout your class
• students who continuously disrupt your class with unnecessary questions or comments
• students who becomes belligerent or argumentative when you confront disruptive behavior

Confidentiality

The Office of Student Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities is committed to respecting the right to privacy of each student involved in our student conduct process. The right to review or discuss a student's disciplinary file lies solely with the student. If a student wants to assign that right to anyone, this Consent to Disclose form must be on file in our office before we can discuss any information related to the student's disciplinary file.
