USF Response to Increased Federal Presence in San Francisco

Dear USF Community,

I know many of our students, faculty, and staff may be worried about reports of increased federal immigration enforcement efforts in San Francisco. The latest information from Mayor Daniel Lurie is that President Trump has said there would be no federal immigration action in the city.

USF is open and will continue to be a supportive space for students, staff, and faculty — as well as any visitors to campus. As a Jesuit Catholic university, the University of San Francisco is committed to protecting and advocating for the safety and well-being of our students and our entire learning community.

If you have not already, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the university’s established protocols for responding to interactions with external law enforcement and government agencies, including federal entities:

  1. The university employee being approached will inform the agent(s) that all agency inquiries are processed through the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Office of General Counsel (OGC).
  2. The DPS director (or the highest-ranking member on site) will obtain the agent’s name, badge number, phone number, the name and phone number of the agent’s supervisor, and copies of the warrants and/or subpoena.
  3. The director will not share any student or employee information unless compelled to by a signed court order or a verified claim of imminent danger to public safety.
  4. The director will personally escort the agent off campus and notify OGC.

While the university enforces these protocols on campus and provides more detailed information online for our community (you must be logged in to access this page), the city of San Francisco is coordinating, too, to maintain public safety and make sure all residents feel safe, respected, and informed.

Thank you for your attention during this time. Please continue to stay informed and prepared.

Kindly,
Salvador D. Aceves ’83, EdD ’95
