Educational Technology

USF's department of Education Technology is here to help you with training classes and workshops, consultation, instructional design, learning spaces, media services and more. Please visit their website to learn about this great resource.

Classroom Technology

The ITS Department handles Classroom Technology.  Every classroom but two on campus is a “smart classroom,” and as such the room is already equipped with most of the technology you will need.

If you are on the hilltop campus you will need to check out keys from the ITS Department before the first day of class. The ITS Department has a help desk in the library that can assist you.

Those teaching Downtown should check with the office manager for more information. You do not need special keys to access the equipment but at the Downtown campus, you will need your ID card.

For quick assistance guides and answers to basic questions,  please visit this page

ITS Help Desk

The ITS Help Desk handles requests for urgent support while a class is in session. They will attempt to resolve your problem during the initial call and will escalate to a Classroom Technology support specialist who will come on-site for any issue that can’t be resolved immediately.   The Help Desk can be reached at (415) 422-6668 or itshelp@usfca.edu (the contact information is also posted in all classrooms)

Please remember to attain a smart key for your room from an ITS Help Desk. To learn more about their locations, please read from Help Desk hours and locations page.

Faculty members have an obligation to meet all their scheduled classes and to hold class throughout the whole of the scheduled time. However, it is recognized that exceptions may exist. Any deviation from regularly scheduled class meetings must be reported by the faculty member to the appropriate Graduate or Undergraduate Associate Dean. If the Associate Dean objects to the deviation, he or she may ask the faculty member to adhere to normal scheduling.

A faculty member who, for good reasons other than illness, needs to be absent from class for a short period must request permission from the Associate Dean. This information can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 19.1.6

If permission to cancel classes is given, Academic Affairs should be notified, please contact Katherine Green (kjgreen@usfca.edu) in Academic Affairs well in advance of any anticipated absences from your class(es).

When a faculty member is forced by illness or other emergency disposition to cancel class on short notice they first should contact a fellow faculty member to see if they can cover the session for them. If no one can be found to cover the session then the students should be informed before the class is scheduled to meet, if possible.

If a class is canceled on short notice, please notify Academic Affairs via email to somclasscanceled@usfca.edu to inform them of your need to cancel class(es) for the reason of illness or other emergency disposition as well as contacting your students through Canvas.

Directed Studies

The purpose of the Directed Study Program is to provide students with the opportunity to study topical areas which are not a part of the ordinary academic program and which would add significant value to the student’s educational experience at USF. Scheduling problems are not a compelling reason to enroll in a Directed Study. Please see the student services office for information on directed studies proposals, approvals, and evaluations.

Full-time faculty are compensated during intersession and summer but are not compensated during spring or fall semesters for supervising an independent study.

Adjunct and full-time faculty (during Summer and Intersession) are compensated per student multiplied by unit(s) at a different rate than the standard class rate.  Please see the academic resources portion of the Intraweb for more information on creating Directed Studies courses and this is a link to a blank form to be filled out.

Internships

Students who wish to participate in an internship for credit must seek the assistance of their academic advisor. Undergraduate students should be referred to CASA, while graduate students can be referred to Graduate Student Affairs.

You can request conference room space through USF's EMS online system .

Please understand that the USF Hilltop campus is very cramped on space and you must be flexible sometimes with the type of space you're requesting or when you are requesting it.

Classroom space is almost entirely booked with classes M-F 9am to 6pm and on most evenings. Large event space is often booked out a year in advance. Any space needed for an outside organization must be approved by the Dean and there will be a charge associated with it.

If you need to schedule a room for the occasional extra class session, regardless of the campus location ask Katherine Green (kjgreen@usfca.edu) to assist you.  Please let her know:

the course and section number (or CRN),

the preferred date of the additional session,

start and end times

One to two weeks notice is best.  Once the room is scheduled, you are free to contact the ITS department about your technology needs for the session as well as notify your students.

Faculty should familiarize themselves with the full range of services offered by Gleeson Library. On the main website, you will find a link to “Faculty Resources” that will introduce you to the library and the services it offers.

Penny Scott is our reference librarian and can aid you.

Reserve Reading

You can place books/readers on electronic reserve at Gleeson Library. To learn more about guidelines and forms for reserve readings, please navigate to the Course Reserves page.

Please note that you must fill out a Reserve Request form (available at the above URL) for any reader or book you put on reserve. It usually takes two to three days at minimum to process your request.
