What is CalFresh?

How does CalFresh work?
College students who are eligible for CalFresh will receive a EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card, which works like a debit card. Eligible students may receive money for groceries on their EBT card each month. CalFresh cards are accepted at many grocery stores and farmer's markets across California.
Among these grocery stores include:
- Trader Joe’s
- Target
- Whole Foods
- Safeway
- Amazon (for online grocery orders)
- Find participating retailers in your neighborhood.
How do I apply for CalFresh benefits?
steps to apply:
- Submit an application online. This application usually takes 10 minutes to complete.
- Submit proof of your situation. This can be done during your application or up to 30 days after you submit your application.
- Have a 30 - 60 minute phone interview with a county worker. County workers usually call within 2 weeks after applications are submitted.
- Get an EBT card with grocery money loaded within 30 days of approval. Your EBT card and PIN are mailed separately for security purposes.
