Explanations and What to Do

Below is a list of registration errors you may encounter when attempting to register for classes. If you encounter an error that is not listed, please contact the Office of the University Registrar at registrar@usfca.edu.

For requests that require a dean’s approval, please contact the Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) at casa@usfca.edu if you are an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences or an undergraduate student in the School of Management.

Error Message	Explanation	What to Do
Campus Restriction	You are attempting to register for a course section that is restricted to a specific student’s campus.	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the campus restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Class Restriction	You are attempting to register for a course section that is restricted to specific student class (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate, Doctoral, or Visiting).	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the class restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Closed Section	There are no more available seats in this course section. There is no waitlist available.	If the course has more than one section, check other sections for available seats.
Cohort Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to a specific cohort.	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the Cohort Restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
College or School Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to a specific college or school (College of Arts & Sciences, School of Education, School of Management, or School of Nursing & Health Professions).	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the college or school restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Corequisite Required	This course section requires you to register for a section of another course concurrently. For example, lecture sections of BIOL 105 have a corequisite of lab sections of BIOL 105L. Students must register for sections of both courses at the same time.	Check the Schedule of Classes to see the companion corequisite course and register for sections of both courses at the same time. Or, request a permit.
Dean Approval Required	You need the dean’s approval to register for the course section.	Request a permit.
Degree Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to a specific degree (Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, etc.).	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the degree restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Department Approval Required	You need the department's approval to register for the course section.	Contact the department offering the course for a permit.
Department Chair Approval Required	You need the department chair’s approval to register for the course section.	Contact the chair of the department offering the course for a permit. For the SONHP, contact the program director of the degree program offering the course for a permit.
Duplicate Course	You are attempting to register for a course with the same course number as a course section for which you have already registered. For example, you will see this error if you are registered for MATH 202-01 and attempt to register for MATH 202-03.	Register for a different course or contact the school or college offering the course for a permit.
Field of Study Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to a specific field of study (major, minor, or concentration).	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the field of study restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Instructor and Dean Approval Required	You need the approval of the instructor and the dean to register for the course section.	Request a permit.
Instructor Approval Required	You need the instructor's permission to register for the course section.	Contact the instructor for a permit.
Level Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to a specific student level (Undergraduate or Graduate).	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the level restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Linked Course Required	You are attempting to register for a course section that requires registration of another section of the same course at the same time.	Register for both sections concurrently. Or, request a permit.
Maximum Units Exceeded	Registering for the course section will cause you to exceed the maximum units allowed.	Drop a course or follow the directions to request an increase in your unit/credit load.
Mutual Exclusion	You are attempting to register for a course that is similar to a course you already completed or a course for which you are currently registered	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the mutual exclusion restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Prerequisite and/or Test Score Required	You do not meet the prerequisite and/or test scores required to register for the course section.	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the prerequisite and/or test score requirements for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Prerequisite Communication Error	There is a Banner registration system error.	Contact the Office of the University Registrar.
Program Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to a specific academic program.	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the program restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
Registration changes are not allowed. Course status dates not within range for part of term.	You are attempting to register after the Last Day to Add for the Course.	Follow the Late Registration procedure.
Reserve Closed	Registration for the section’s reserved seats is closed. There is no waitlist. A section may have seats reserved for a specific field of study, class, student attribute, etc.	Register for a different course section.
Student Attribute Restriction	Registration for the course section is restricted to students with a specific attribute (e.g., Honor College students).	Check the Schedule of Classes to ensure that you meet the student attribute restriction for the course section. Or, request a permit.
System Processing Error	There is a Banner registration system error.	Contact the Office of the University Registrar.
Time Conflict	There is a time conflict between this course section and another course section on your schedule.	Make adjustments to your schedule. Or, request a permit.
