Counseling Psychology Ph.D.

Purpose

  • Trained to have a broader scope of practice and provide patients with more culturally-sensitive and culturally-informed treatment options
  • Individuals with a PhD in counseling psychology can work as counselors and educators in an academic setting

Program Length

  • A PhD program can take anywhere from 4-8 years to complete
  • Some schools may have accelerated programs that allow you to take more courses and begin your dissertation earlier
  • Requires additional fieldwork hours post-graduation

Licensure

  • Depending on the state, candidates must accrue between 2,000-3,000 fieldwork hours
  • Pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)
  • Pass the state-specific licensure exam
