Information for AEM placement and progress through levels
- Test Scores
Official test scores (iBT TOEFL, IELTS, etc.) submitted directly to USF Admissions by the testing service company, will determine tentative placement in the AEM Program.
- English Placement Test
During Orientation Week, students will take the English Placement Test (EPT) to determine final placement in AEM classes in order to best support individual academic needs at USF.
- Courses
Courses in AEM are sequenced in two tracks: Academic Reading and Writing, and Academic Oral Communication. In each track, we offer courses at the intermediate, low advanced, and advanced level. Once test scores are confirmed through the English Placement Test, students are placed into the correct level of each track and move sequentially through the required courses by achieving a final grade of āCā or better.
- Program Length
Based on the original EPT score and subsequent grades, students will take between 4 and 16 credits of AEM course work in a semester until they have completed their English language condition. For the majority of students, the condition is completed in one semester of 8-12 credits in AEM course work. Especially strong students may follow a procedure to skip an Academic Reading/Writing course.
- Skipping
Students in the AEM Program can apply to skip a level if they are excelling in their course. Information and application materials are sent to AEM students in the end of the semester before finals period. Students should consult with their AEM Advisor if they have questions about the process.
