Joint Committee on Faculty Development Funds

FDF Revised Guide

JFDC Form: Teaching Effectiveness

JFDC Form: Research

Update from Committee: February 8, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

We hope your semester is going well. We have two updates: (1) Fall Re-allocation applications; and (2) The Spring Faculty Development Funds (FDF) Application cycle is now open.

(1) RE-ALLOCATION APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2022 FDF AWARDS (see detailed guidance HERE  for reallocation applications).

Application: Google Form-Submit Reallocation Application for Fall Funds 2022 - HERE

Deadline: Wednesday, March 1, 2023 (by 11:59 pm).

 (2) SPRING FDF CYCLE

Application: Google Form-Submit Spring FDF Application - HERE

DeadlineWednesday, March 1, 2023 (by 11:59 pm).

As in previous years, all full-time faculty are eligible to apply. These funds can be used for scholarly travel, research and/or teaching effectiveness. All applications for the Spring cycle will be accepted (and approved, within 1-2 weeks) on a rolling basis until the final deadline of Wed. March 1st by 11:59 pm.

The differential eligible amount is to accommodate the greater need of support for projects for tenure/promotion among assistant and associate professors than full professors. For the Spring application cycle, faculty can apply as follows:

  • Assistant Professors: Up to $2800*
  • Associate Professors: Up to $2400*
  • Full Professors: Up to $2100*

*NOTE: Please include your full budget (up to or over the amounts listed above). We may have some additional funds after the deadline, depending on how many applications we receive. Since we cannot carry over funds into the next year, we’d like to allocate remaining funds in an equitable manner to those needing additional funding. Those notifications will be sent separately from the initial spring cycle notification - soon after the March 1st deadline and after the committee meets.

Please submit all applications online to the google link above and include:

  1. the appropriate SOE Application Cover Forms (i.e., research or teaching). The link has PDF and Word doc - we are attaching the WORD version in case that is easier to fill out (you can take a picture of your signature and paste it onto the Word doc).
  2. a complete Narrative statement including: (a) a brief (1-2 paragraphs) description of your project and how the funds will support your work; and (b) an itemized budget
  3. The deadline for spring funds to be used is August 15, 2023.

When you submit an application, please follow up with an email to let your department representative know. The department reps are:

  • Genevieve (DLS)
  • Christine (CPSY)
  • Rosa (IME)
  • Ruchi (TED)
  • Xornam (L&I)

Please note: The following items require Dean’s approval - all international travel, hotel fees above $275/night (not including taxes), and items beyond the scope of the FDF Guide. If your application requires Dean’s approval, please make a note of it on the Google Form & we will follow up with next steps.

We understand that some people may have undertaken scholarly travel, research and/or teaching effectiveness projects over the winter break or in the beginning of the semester.  You may apply retroactively for these projects (e.g., you attended a conference in January and want to use FDF to cover expenses).

If you are new to (or unfamiliar with) the FDF process, please see the attached FDF Guide, including allowable vs. unallowable FDF expenses, application procedures, and CONCUR FOP even/odd accounts and documenting/reporting.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to members of the committee. For people that are new to the JFDF process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to people in your department and/or to members of the committee.  We are all here to support each other with this process.

Thank you,

Update from Committee: October 27, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

We hope your semester is going well. The Fall JFDF Application cycle is now open. This year, 2022-2023, there will be two rounds of JFDF applications - one in Fall and one in Spring.  As in previous years, full-time faculty are eligible to apply in both cycles, though the Spring application cycle will privilege junior faculty.

For the Fall application cycle, faculty in the assistant or associate rank are eligible to apply for up to $3500, while faculty in the full professor rank are eligible to apply for up to $3000. This differential eligible amount is to accommodate the greater need of support for projects for tenure/promotion among assistant and associate professors than full professors. These funds can be used for scholarly travel, research and/or teaching effectiveness.  Please use the attached forms (i.e., research and/or teaching) when applying for funds. Additionally, please be sure to include an itemized budget as to how you intend to spend the funds (e.g. if you are applying for funds for a conference, please include airfare, hotel costs, etc.).

Please submit all applications online HERE.  When you do submit an application, please let your department rep. know. All applications for the Fall cycle will be accepted (and approved, within 2 weeks) on a rolling basis until the final deadline of  November 28th by 11:59 pm.  There will be no exceptions.  If you do not apply during the Fall application cycle, you may apply during the Spring application cycle.  However, the amount of money available will be reduced in the Spring.

We understand that some people may have undertaken scholarly travel, research and/or teaching effectiveness projects over the summer and/or in the beginning of the semester.  You may apply retroactively during the Fall application cycle for these projects (e.g. you attended a conference this summer and want to use FDF to cover expenses).

If you are new to (or unfamiliar with) the FDF process, please see the Quick  Guide to FDF PDF file above.  It includes allowable vs. unallowable FDF expenses, application procedures, and documenting/reporting FDF on Concur.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to members of the committee.  For people that are new to the JFDF process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to people in your department and/or to members of the committee.  We are all here to support each other with this process.
