Externships in Cambodia

USF Students and Faculty sharing a meal in Cambodia

USF’s externship program in Phnom Penh, Cambodia offers an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact on the world. This program places students at NGOs and nonprofits working on meaningful legal issues in human rights, social and economic justice, and government policy.  Orientation includes current constitutional issues, an overview of the Cambodian justice system, juvenile justice law, anti-trafficking laws, and economic policy.

Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia. Located at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac rivers, it serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural hub. Known for its French colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and significant historical sites like the Royal Palace and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Phnom Penh reflects Cambodia's blend of ancient Khmer heritage and modern development. The city has experienced rapid urban growth in recent years, with an expanding skyline, though it still faces challenges related to infrastructure, traffic, and socio-economic disparities.

Past placements have included NGO-CEDAW and Open Development Cambodia (ODC), Royal Cambodian Legal Education Center (CLEC), UNICEF (working on human trafficking), Legal Aid of Cambodia (LAC), International Organization on Migration (IOM), and Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC Cam).
