Cultural Centers Dialogues on Race
Staff members of the Cultural Centers designed an intergroup dialogue curriculum that provided space for USF students to learn, increase their awareness and talk about social identity with a focus on critical contemporary issues. This series, called the "Cultural Diversity Immersion Workshop Series", offered students the opportunity to build their racial literacy and to help define their roles in activism. Students earned digital badges when they completed workshops.
The topics of the workshops included identity awareness, interpersonal engagement, and solidarity building. Students who completed the workshops received badges to recognize their accomplishments. In total, over 50 undergraduate and graduate students completed the workshops in Fall 2021. With such high engagement and participation, more sessions were offered than originally planned. In the following year of the initiative, 11 total facilitators were trained to meet the demand for the workshops.
Intergroup dialogues about race, hosted by staff and students of the Cultural Centers, provided facilitated space for students to explore racism in a U.S. context and their experiences within a society structured by a racial hierarchy. This course provided students with the opportunity for “passionate engagement in social analysis” and a critical engagement with contemporary issues.
