Rhetoric & Composition (Core A2) Pathway to Completion

Overview

All USF students are required to complete Rhetoric and Composition (University Core A2 Requirement) prior to graduation.

How the Core A2 Impacts Access to Taking Business Core Courses

Core A2 completion is a co-requisite and/or pre-requisite for all  School of Management (SOM) Business Core courses ( BUS 201, BUS 202, 204, 205, 302, 304, 305, 308, 401/406).

Students cannot take BUS 202 or higher (Business Core) until they have completed Core A2.  It is therefore critical to start your Rhetoric & Composition sequence immediately upon admission and continue taking these courses until Core A2 completion.

How USF Determines Student Course Placement into RHET

When admitted to USF, students were required to either submit their SAT or ACT test scores, or take a placement test in order to determine where they placed within the five possible Rhetoric and Composition pathways.

To verify your course placement:

  1. Log-in to myUSF portal.
  2. Select Student
  3. Select Student Records
  4. Select "View Test Scores"
  5. Your test scores and pathway placement will be shown.  Follow the pathway progression chart to complete your Core A2 (also see example at bottom of page).

Core A2 Completion Pathway & Progression Chart

Once placed within a path, see image below, students must continue within that sequence (going down the chart, not across) until they have take RHET 120 (or it's equivalent) which fulfills the Core A2 requirement.

Pathways to Core A2 Completion (Written Progression Explanation)

Please follow these pathways from Initial Placement to Core A2 to completion.

Pathway 1

  1. First, take ESL course(s) as determined by the Department of Academic English for Multilingual Students
  2. Next, take RHET 106 or RHET 106N (106N is an intensive section that allows students to have 2 additional hours of class time to work on writing projects with the assistance of the professor.)
  3. Next, take RHET 110 or 110N (110N is an intensive section that allows students to have 2 additional hours of class time to work on writing projects with the support of the professor.)
  4. Finally, take RHET 120 (or it's equivalent - see Degree Evaluation for options).
  5. Core A2 is now complete.

Pathway 2

  1. First, take RHET 106 or RHET 106N (106N is an intensive section that allows students to have 2 additional hours of class time to work on writing projects with the assistance of the professor.)
  2. Next, take RHET 110 or 110N (110N is an intensive section that allows students to have 2 additional hours of class time to work on writing projects with the support of the professor.)
  3. Finally, take RHET 120 (or it's equivalent - see Degree Evaluation for options).
  4. Core A2 is now complete.

Pathway 3

  1. First, take RHET 110 or 110N (110N is an intensive section that allows students to have 2 additional hours of class time to work on writing projects with the support of the professor.)
  2. Finally, take RHET 120 (or it's equivalent - see Degree Evaluation for options).
  3. Core A2 is now complete.

Pathway 4

  1. First, take RHET 130
  2. Finally, take RHET 131 (this course also satisfies your Core A1: Public Speaking requirement).
  3. Core A2 is now complete.

Example: Sample Student's Test Score Placement & Path to Completion

Sample Student's Test Score Screen:

Placement:
In this example, the student's test scores (image below) placed in Pathway 3 and is eligible to take either the RHET 130/131 sequence or RHET 195 in order to complete Core A2.

Options:
While this student could take one course to complete Core A2, the student can complete Core A1 (Public Speaking) and Core A2 (RHET & COMP.) by completing the RHET 130&131 sequence.

Pathway & Course Progression to Completion:
This student chose to take RHET 130&RHET 131.  Therefore, the first course she should take her first semester at USF is RHET 130. The following term, she will take RHET 131.  Upon completion of RHET 131, her Core A2 (and Core A1) will be complete.
