Goals and Objectives

Program Goals

Students will experience first-hand the culture and politics of Washington D.C., where they will:

  • explore the theory and practice of ethical public service by taking academically rigorous courses
  • connect with influential policy makers, members of the media, and USF alumni
  • pursue transformational internships
  • take advantage of civic engagement opportunities

Program Outcomes

  • Students will synthesize and apply knowledge gained from their academic field, previous service experiences, and the content of the service-learning program to inform their participation in civic life, politics, and government.
  • Students will demonstrate cultural humility as they navigate a situation’s ethical, logical, cultural, and contextual factors.
  • Students will develop and implement situationally appropriate communication strategies including listening, speaking, clarifying, reflecting and adapting.
  • Students will describe and analyze the intersection of their own civic and social identities with cultural contexts and political processes unique to Washington D.C.
  • Students will develop research skills and apply appropriate methodologies to create reasoned, well-supported analysis of a research topic.
