Undergraduate Advising

Every semester, the Department of Computer Science hosts individual advising appointments with each student. All CS majors are required to attend one of these sessions to assist with course planning, academic and professional goals, as well as provide guidance and referrals when challenges arise.

Taking advantage of advising

Advising works best if you are making your own decisions. Each time you meet your adviser, consider your overall goals, your short-term plans, and the specific questions you need to ask. You will have your file at the meeting, and your checklist should be kept up to date.

Computer Science Advising

All CS majors are assigned a faculty adviser during your first semester. It’s always a good idea to make an advising appointment, even during your adviser’s regular office hours, so that they can set aside time just for you. Most, if not all advisers, willingly schedule appointments outside their posted office hours, if these hours don’t work out for you. Email your adviser to set up another time.

You can find your adviser through MyUSF:

  • Log into your MyUSF dashboard
  • Click on the "Student" button in the middle Self Service box
  • Click on “Student Records”
  • Click on “Degree Evaluation”

Meeting With Your Adviser

Each CS adviser has regular weekly office hours that are posted on their office doors. Students are encouraged to email their adviser to schedule an appointment to ensure that they are able to dedicate sufficient time to answer your questions.

Advising through CASA

Students are assigned an academic success coach by the Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA). CASA offers programs such as New Student Orientation, Back-on-Track Program, and a variety of Peak Performance Sessions.
