What are Election Support Drop-Ins?
These drop-in spaces provide easy access to informal confidential consultations and support
around election-related stress with therapists from Counseling and Psychological Services
(CAPS). These are walk-in appointments on a first-come, first-serve basis. No appointment is
necessary, though you can call to reserve one. If you want to meet over Zoom instead of in-person, please call to arrange.
What happens at a visit?
The therapist will listen closely to you and can provide support, perspective, and suggestions for
coping and resources.
How are these drop-ins different from other services at USF CAPS?
CAPS provides brief individual, couples, and group therapy. Election Support Drop-Ins are not
formal therapy sessions; they are a drop-in space where students can have a one-time informal
consultation with a therapist about distress related to the 2024 US elections only. You do not
have to complete any paperwork and you do not become a client of CAPS by attending a drop-in.
Who should visit Election Support Drop-Ins?
This service is open to all USF undergraduate and graduate students who are looking for support
with distress related to the 2024 US elections. If you are looking for support with other issues or
concerns or for brief ongoing care, you can contact CAPS to set up a standard phone
screening/triage appointment. If after attending the drop-in you decide you are interested in more
ongoing support, CAPS will assist you with scheduling a phone screening/triage appointment.
I want to attend an Election Support Drop-In, but I can’t make any of the times. What
should I do?
If you can’t make any of the times but still want support from CAPS, you can contact CAPS to
schedule a standard phone screening/triage appointment at 415-422-6352 or fill out our web form to get started scheduling a non-crisis appointment.. You can also check
the CAPS website for self-help resources under “Election Support.”
What else do I need to know?
Election Support Drop-Ins are not a substitute for formal therapy and do not constitute mental
health treatment. You do not become a client of CAPS by attending a drop-in. Therapists provide
informal consultations to help students with election-related stress.
Election Support Drop-Ins are confidential. Are there any limits to confidentiality?
Conversations with our therapists are confidential, with a few very rare exceptions. Therapists
may need to share information in an emergency when there is an immediate threat of harm to self
or others. Therapists are also required by law to report when a minor, elderly person, or someone
otherwise unable to act on his/her own behalf is being abused.
