Making an Appointment
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is offering remote individual and group teletherapy to students residing within California via a confidential platform. (State regulations prevent provision of therapy across state lines.)
Any currently enrolled USF student can request brief, free, and confidential individual or couples (both parties must be USF students) counseling at CAPS. Enrolled students whose issues can be served by CAPS are eligible for brief counseling each academic year. Students desiring or needing longer-term, specialized, or ongoing weekly counseling will be provided with referral options.
Although CAPS staff strive to see students as expediently as possible, there are times during the semester when the center is heavily impacted. The typical wait for service is two weeks. Students will be seen the same day for mental health emergencies.
To schedule an appointment, please call our office at (415) 422-6352 or stop by at Gillson Hall, Lower Level between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. These are our regular operating hours, with a limited number of prescheduled early evening times available by appointment only. Our front office staff will ask a few questions to help determine which sort of appointment would best meet your needs.
When you call after hours, the automated system allows USF students experiencing urgent mental health issues and others concerned about a USF student who may be in crisis to choose option 2 to talk to a professional counselor by phone. After-hours callers needing to cancel an appointment or with other non-urgent issues can leave a voicemail to take messages, which are checked by CAPS staff during business hours.
CAPS appointments are 45 minutes long and typically start at 15 minutes after the hour. Before an initial appointment, students are asked to come early to complete a computer assessment.
