Reduce Slips and Falls this Season

January 25, 2018

Dear USF Community,

Now that winter is well underway, it is important to remind everyone to be careful not only when walking outside but also to be cautious when walking inside - especially in the stairwells. The Health & Safety Committee would like to pass along a few tips to be safe when walking throughout campus during the rainy season.

The following are some simple ways to reduce the likelihood of a slip and/or fall on wet or slippery floors:

  • Take slow, small steps.
  • Use handrails or other stable objects that you can hold onto.
  • Use your feet as probes to detect possible slip, trip and fall hazards.
  • Always try and wear the best non-skid shoe possible. Avoid heals during inclement weather.
  • When coming indoors in raining weather, wipe your shoes thoroughly on a doormat.
  • Put down your cell phone! Being alert is one of the surest ways to reduce injuries caused by slip and falls. This includes being aware of your environment, personal safety, and the safety of others.
  • For emergencies please call Public Safety at ext. 2911 from any campus phone or 415-422-2911 from any non-campus phone.

    Thank you,
    The Health & Safety Committee
