Ramadan Mubarak!

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is a holy season for Islam that celebrates the revelation of the Qu’ran. This year the month of Ramadan falls between the evening of February 28, 2025, to March 29, 2025. The dates are determined according to the lunar calendar and therefore change from year to year.

Ramadan is a month of increased prayer and fasting for Muslims. Muslims observing Ramadan abstain from food and water during the daylight hours and eat their meals only between sundown and sunrise.

For our Students

For our Muslim students who are observing Ramadan, we understand that some might feel fatigued at times during the day while fasting, and you may desire additional support or flexibility with school tasks. We ask that you please communicate with your professor any requests for reasonable accommodations you require to fulfill your religious obligations. We will do our best to serve you and to honor your observance of Ramadan.

For our faculty and staff, consistent with our Jesuit and Catholic commitment to inclusion and respect for all faith traditions, we respectfully request that you extend every courtesy and reasonable accommodation to students who are observing Ramadan. For example, some students may need to eat a small meal during class after sundown, or may request brief absences from class for prayer. Some may request extended hours, a flexible schedule for exams, or an alternative project or assignment. We also encourage any gatherings on campus that involve food to have To-Go containers available. In this way, any community member observing Ramadan can take food with them for Iftar and Suhoor.

The following USF resources are available to all members of the community:

  • The University Ministry Meditation Room (Toler 123), equipped with a Wudu station, is open with tap access before sunrise until just after sunset daily. Prayer rugs are available.
  • Jumma Prayer with Imam Sundiata Rashid happens every Friday at 12-12:30pm in the Romero Room at University Ministry (Toler 122).
  • Bon Appetite will provide appropriate Halal options clearly marked at stations along with plenty of vegetarian options and fish on several days each week. There will also be Halal items and frozen meals available at the Outtahere store and Lone Mountain. During Spring Break (March 8th - March 15th) cafe hours will be 11 am to 6 pm, so please arrive early for dinner.
  • Student Disability Services (SDS) is an on-campus resource for students with disabilities who need assistance with academic and co-curricular accommodations.
  • University Ministry’s Romero Room may be reserved for prayers.

May this Ramadan be filled with happiness, peace, prosperity, and success for you and your loved ones.
