Find Your Why

A 5-Step Journey to Belonging at USF
A digital experience for First-Year and Transfer Students
“Belonging is not a destination. It’s a decision.” — Dr. Terrell Strayhorn
Step 1: Choose Your Why
When you know why you're here, the how gets easier.
Ask yourself:
- What matters most to me right now?
- What do I hope to learn, feel, and become this year?
Write it down. Type it in your notes. Share it with a mentor.
Step 2: Make a Connection
Belonging begins when you feel seen.
- Say hello in class
- Ask your GO Team leader or RA a question
- Join a club meeting or attend a Cultural Center event
Try this challenge: Make one meaningful introduction this week.
Step 3: Engage with Curiosity
The people who thrive here are the ones who show up.
- Attend a workshop, job fair, or service project
- Participate in a USF tradition or welcome event
- Ask someone about their USF experience
Reflect: What’s something new I tried — and what did I learn about myself?
Step 4: Explore with Intention
Your major doesn’t define you — your values do.
- Visit the Career Center or Major Exploration event
- Talk to a faculty member about their journey
- Reflect on what excites you, challenges you, and grounds you
Ask: Where do I feel most alive, most curious, most like myself?
Step 5: Embrace the Uncomfortable
Belonging takes courage. Show up anyway.
- Acknowledge when things feel awkward or lonely
- Reach out for help — CAPS, CASA, a mentor
- Remember: discomfort = growth
Affirmation: I don’t have to have it all figured out. My presence here is enough.
Your Weekly Check-In:
- What helped me feel seen this week?
- Who did I connect with?
- What challenged me — and what did I learn?
- What’s one small step I’ll take next?
You Belong at USF.
No matter how your story starts, it belongs here.
When in doubt, return to your “why.” When you feel lost, reach out. When you feel joy — share it.
