Transfer Student Support

By Arynn Auzout, MEd

On behalf of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) we welcome you to the University of San Francisco! We understand that being a transfer student can bring about unique issues and concerns, but also valuable experience and perspective. It is our hope that this article can help you navigate your transition and join the USF community.

Students are eligible for a variety of services at CAPS. We offer brief individual and couples therapy to registered students. In therapy you can discuss and explore various concerns about your adjustment/transition, relationships, anxiety, and other concerns. Each semester we offer a number of groups for group therapy, for example in the past we have offered groups about relationship building, LGBTQ identity, anxiety, and other topics. We update our list of group offerings on our website at the beginning of each semester. On our website you can also find information about our services, making an appointment, various resources, and take an anonymous online self-assessment.

Consider the following tips and suggestions below to help your transition to USF.

How do you envision your experience at USF?

When you applied to USF, what did you expect when you arrived? What drew you to USF? Was it the campus, a major/department, campus culture, the city? What are your interests? Think about what you want out of your experience at USF, as it can shape how and where you get connected to the university.

Explore the website

You might have done this when you were considering applying to USF, but revisit https://myusf.usfca.edu/. Explore the various departments, offices, programs, links and videos.

Meet your CASA coach

As a transfer/new student you are assigned an Academic Success Coach through the Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA). Your coach is a valuable resource in assisting you with your academic needs and overall adjustment to the university. You can ask you coach questions about academic forms, credit hours, courses, majors, tutoring, study abroad, and much more.

Get connected on social media

Social media can be a great way to get up to date information about programs and events happening on and near campus. USF and many organizations and programs are on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Get involved!

USF has an organization for transfer students, TransferNation that seeks to provide academic and social support. TransferNation hosts many events on and off campus. For more information about TransferNation, please contact Student Leadership and Engagement (SLE) by email at sle@usfca.edu or by phone at 415-422-7256. Identify other organizations and programs that cater to and support your interests and needs while at USF. Consider stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying new activities.

Places to go and things to do on-campus:

  • The University Center is a major hub, housing two cafeterias, the bookstore, Career Services, CASA, Student Leadership and Engagement, the Cultural Centers and much more.
  • The Involvement Fair occurs at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semester and can be a great way to meet other students and learn more about the many student organizations at USF.
  • For more information about other events and programs offered by Student Leadership and Engagement, please visit their website.

Be patient

Understand that the adjustment will take some time. Be patient with yourself and the process. Think about other transitions you have experienced and what you can learn from that transition and apply to this one.

Remember that you are not alone in your transition. You have the support of others and CAPS is an additional support that you are welcome to utilize. Visit us in the lower level of Gillson Hall or give us a call 415-422-6352. Again, Welcome!
