UTEC Handbook

Overview

The Undergraduate Teacher Education Center (UTEC) fosters a culture of collaborative learning and critical pedagogies, preparing tomorrow’s teachers to thrive in classrooms. The UTEC serves participants by providing high-quality education and professional training.

By taking credential courses throughout the undergraduate years, students can accomplish their choice of the following programs:

Credential/BA Program

A bachelor’s degree and preliminary CA Multiple Subjects (MS) or Single Subject (SS) Teaching Credential (4 years) (Note: Limited to MS Education: Liberal Studies majors, or SS English or History majors)

Dual Degree Program

A bachelor’s degree, preliminary CA Multiple Subjects or Single Subject Teaching Credential, and a Master’s degree (5 years)

Students may earn an additional preliminary credential in Special Education by adding one year to either program listed above (six-year program). Students who only want a Special Education credential and Master’s degree can participate in a different six-year program that requires fewer teaching classes during the undergraduate years. Note: Special Education credential students work as paid full-time teachers while completing the Special Education graduate portion of their program.

Additionally, for students with heritage or academic language ability, a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish can be added to any program.

Important Note

This handbook contains valuable information. While we strive to keep this handbook up to date, state and federal regulations can change very quickly. It is crucial that students read their Donsmail and check the UTEC Canvas site to keep abreast of current requirements. Unlike the rest of the College of Arts and Sciences, requirements for the UTEC may change while a student is in the program. Students may need to satisfy the new requirements, different from those that were in place at the time of entrance into the program. While we will try to avoid this situation, we are required to follow regulations. Should such a circumstance arise, the UTEC staff will help students meet new requirements.
