University Requirements
Unit Requirement
All USF students must complete at least 128 units to graduate. There are no exceptions to this rule. The last 30 units must be taken in residence at USF.
Major Requirement
UTEC students must meet all of the requirements for their major. Typically, a major requires a minimum of 40 units, although many majors require more than 40 units. Please note that all majors have specific course requirements in addition to unit requirements.
Language Requirement
Single Subject Language Requirement
All students pursuing a BA degree, whose native language is English, must successfully complete the 3rd semester of a language, or for a few languages, the 2nd semester. All students pursuing a BS degree, whose native language is English, must successfully complete the 2nd semester of a language. Exemption from this requirement may be obtained through establishment of language proficiency as determined by results of the online Foreign Language Placement Test, transfer of equivalent college-level course credit, or achievement of a minimum score of 4 on any foreign language CEEB Advanced Placement Exam. See this link for detailed information about fulfilling the foreign language requirement, as well as the waiver process.
Multiple Subject Language Requirement
Currently, the language requirement is waived for Multiple Subjects candidates participating in UTEC programs. Most major advisors are not aware of this special waiver; more often not, you will be the first to let your advisor know that you do not have to take language classes. Note that this waiver is typically not applied to a student’s Degree Evaluation until the final semester before they graduate, per policies set by the Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA). The Program Manager manually submits these waivers to the Associate Dean of CASA the semester before a student graduates.
Core Requirement
All USF students must complete 44 units of Core classes in 11 different areas. Note that some UTEC classes also fulfill a Core requirement. For instance, the UTEC Fieldwork courses fulfill the Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Core requirement. While UTEC and major advisors will discuss Core requirements with students, it is ultimately the students’ responsibility to ensure fulfillment of these requirements prior to graduation.
